I'll do a Squidcast when I get the urge to mess around and add a new CSS lab experiment.

Or check out page 2 of this lens, where I've archived my old CSS lab experiments (the original version of this page). There's a few good CSS tips amidst the clutter.

Blessed by a very perplexed Angel - I'll save it to try things out later - are we supposed to learn all this off-by-heart, or simply copy and paste with appropriate ammendments?
  • Greekgeek May 24, 2012 @ 5:24 pm | delete
Oh goodness! Copy and paste when you want to use one of them. Half the reason I build some of these tutorials is for my own use as templates. Once I figure out some code to make a particular effect, I save it as a template on a lens like this, so I can come back, copy, and reuse it instead of having to work it out again. :)

You make the most helpful lenses! This one is going to require lots of study but it's just what I need. I was trying to center two rows of images with info. They worked fine off the left but when I tried to center everything, the info under the picts didn't line up. I see from this lens that the simple code I was trying to use is considered "bad practice" anyway. I'm off to study now!

Thank you so much for writing this. It's really invaluable to me being quite new. It's nice to see people like you caring about other Squidoo users and trying to get them on the right track.
One thing, your link to "good web graphics which are free to use" in this lens doesn't work as it links to 'squiodoo' instead of Squidoo. Just thought I'd let you know. :)
  • petemism Feb 24, 2011 @ 11:03 am | delete
btw - when do I get to make a nice right-bar TOC like yours .. at a point level-wise the ability to customise the right bar was mentioned but I've seen no more.
I've also noticed that long lenses end up with a bunch of wasted screen estate on the right . .any suggestions?
  • Greekgeek Feb 24, 2011 @ 1:01 pm | delete
While you're in the lens workshop, go to the upper left and click Manage Widgets. These widgets go in the sidebar. They are sidebar versions of some of Squidoo's most popular modules: the Amazon module, the Featured Lenses module (it'll show up to 3 at a time; if you enter more, it'll pick 3 from your list at random), and the RSS Feed module.

On this lens, I've got Squidcasts -- updates I've posted for the lens, like a mini-blog. You can also access Squidcasts in the Lens Workshop -- it's one of the tabs at the top -- or on your dashboard; "Cast" is one of the links when you hover over a lens name.

To get the RSS feed of your Squidcasts, use this:

    http://www.squidoo.com/xml/syndicate_lens/lensname

replacing "lensname" with whatever is after www.squidoo.com/ on your lens URL.
  • petemism Feb 24, 2011 @ 10:59 am | delete
Thank you so much Greekgeek for this stuff - it'll be invaluable as I get more proficient with lensmastery.
I spotted the tabbed links on the previous poster's lense and was very happy to find that here. Though btw, I've noticed some odd behaviour with page loads being forced for what appears to be an internal anchor, any ideas ?
you and readers may be interested in a couple of lenses I've started that relate to things you consider here.and which I hope may be useful in connection with lens customisation and optimization.
Squid-hotlink: easy-linking to lenses and the web,
The lense is the beginnings of a template system for linking to other lenses and Web resources, prompted by my initial frustration with the existing Squidoo link list modules, there are HTML/CSS snippets for creating links.
A CGI forms version will be available from my site shortly( there'll be links on my lenses).
I'll be using some of what I've learned form your tips here as I expand and enhance the lens.
And with your permission quote from it at Snippets: a collection of handy code fragments for Squidoo, programming and web development
This lens is brand new so there's not much there yet. There is a small perl script for quoting HTML and code for easy pasting into lenses.
I hope Greekgeek had something similar when preparing these pages.
A CGI web forms version of this is also forthcoming.
I hope some lensmasters may like to contribute and/ or offer some feedback for these lenses.
I'll be sure to post a link to this fine lense from there.
    Thanks again.
  • Greekgeek Feb 24, 2011 @ 12:57 pm | delete
I'm glad this helped! But I'd rather you link to rather than quote my tutorials. I've put dozens of hours into this page, although it doesn't look like much. If my tutorials are available elsewhere, then I don't get the visits or income from them. And I am trying to support myself with pages like this. :)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by page loads and an internal anchor. Perhaps you're referring to the fact that Squidoo loads links to non-Squidoo pages in a new tab or window? You can change this in your profile settings.

For links to other lenses, I usually use the Featured Lenses module set to "All." Once in a while, I'll create some other kind of navigation between lenses, or imitate the featured lenses module and tweak it. (Those are tutorials as well. Use 'em, but please don't take the code for another tutorial... again, I'm trying to earn a living here, and I'm not willing to compete with myself. ;) )

I'm having a little trouble understanding the pages you've pointed me to, unfortunately.

As for how I paste code as above, well, I've been writing HTML for 15+ years, so it really isn't that hard for me to write it by hand. I just have to check for mistakes. When I'm doing something complicated, I use my trusty Mac HTML editor, Pagespinner.

Truly love the borders tips. How do I get that shameless plug in widget thing? I have seen it on several lenses and would like to add it to a few of mine, that is of course if its not reserved for special users. Can't seem to find it in google. Thanks. I have subscribed to your guestbook so I do hope you respond.
  • Greekgeek Jul 24, 2010 @ 3:37 pm | delete
The shameless plug widget is simply a bit of CSS I cobbled together; I don't think I've posted the whole code anywhere. People have occasionally copied it. As usual, in exchange for using my stuff, I ask for people to link to, favorite, lensroll, Tweet, or otherwise give a small bit of PR to one of my lenses. :)

To get the code, choose "View Source" on this page and then use your browser's "Find" function to search for the words: "This here is my guestbook" . Everything from the <p style="blah blah blah" to right before "I hope you've found this lens useful" is the code for the widget. Note that the code includes URLs pointing to this lens -- change them to the URLs of your own lens, instead.

Let me know if you have trouble finding it. I'm being lazy in sending you to View Source, but it's also a handy tip: I've learned a lot by viewing the HTML and CSS of other people's webpages. :)

Note also that Fluffanutta's "Lens Love" widget has now been added to Squidoo's list of modules. It is a similar widget that features an automatic email, favorite, thumb and lensroll widget.

um, great lens, but one thing. I managed to use a span tag no problem. It wrapped around my text very nicely and I also used one as a placeholder for an image. I took them off again though as I was worried it wouldn't render in other browsers. Have Squidoo changed something since you wrote this page?
  • Greekgeek Jun 7, 2010 @ 3:19 am | delete
Sorry, I didn't see the email notice for this comment! Yes, Squidoo has changed a lot since I wrote this lens, including allowing the span tag. I desperately need to revamp this lens!
  • Greekgeek Jun 13, 2010 @ 2:07 pm | delete
Yes, and thank you! Your question nudged me to do a total overhaul of this page, which I'd been putting off. Squidoo now allows although it still won't let us use DIV.

I was absolutely thrilled when I found your module on making rounded-corner paragraphs. They look great! I do a lot of lenses with links to Amazon using the Amazon buttons, which have rounded corners. The 'grafs and the buttons look like they were made for each other. Thanks a ton!

There's so much more I can learn about HTML and CSS from your lenses, so I'll be back often.

Fantastic. Thanks for this. I'm used to being able to really control my CSS, and it's been a struggle to just get it to *do what I want*. Your tips have made my life a fair bit easier. Keep experimenting!

You have done an excellent job of explaining how these inline CSS does work! I appreciate the help. I was particularly pleased that you explained how to modify the height of a row and made use of the height: Hem; code. Thanks!

    What about CSS in titles?

Thanks for the good lens. You might enjoy checking out mine.

I think this one is a bit over my head, but I am marking it for future lenses when I am more comfortable with the whole process! Now I have a better idea what I can work toward. 5*

Great stuff, I'll be on the lookout for more. Please announce in the forums once you've got a few more tricks up your sleeve. I'm trying to navigate around wordpress and CSS would come in handy.

The Purple Gallinules just flew over to check out your lens. For such a great lens we're sending you a virtual cup of coffee on the house. We can hardly wait to read the rest of your lenses.

This lens is something between a laboratory and a kitchen, and it's been fun watching you play, experiment, blend and conjure!

Oh, I can't wait to give some of this great stuff a try. I added this lens to my favorites, and bookmarked it so I can use it as a reference. I love how you made a tutorial out of it, excellent choice.
  • Greekgeek Feb 22, 2008 @ 12:56 pm | delete
Oh, Margaret, a very good idea. "Link List" sans links -- you mean the Text List too, I bet! -- would give rows without having to jump through so many hoops. I'll mention your suggestion in the module!
  • Margaret_Schaut Feb 22, 2008 @ 10:07 am | delete
Wowie, you ALWAYS blow me away. We are so lucky to have you! Once I get some time and courage I'll give it a try- I LOVE how you did the photo credits! One question: can't this be used very well in the link list module- I've used the link list (sans links) for places where I needed to do things I couldn't elsewhere. The Link List is a very flexible module.

The Phoenix: I was just playing around to show that one could have an image hang out. But yes, that looks a bit odd, so its applications are limited! At least now I've figured out how to make sure the bottom's all lined up if I want it to.

bluejeanmomma, don't feel too intimidated! I've been messing with web pages since 1993, so I've sloooowly developed new tricks by experimenting and by imitating things I liked on other people's web pages. You'll develop your own toolbook over time!
  • blujeanmomma Feb 21, 2008 @ 9:04 am | delete
Thank you for all of this wonderful information. I am not sure how you figure all of this stuff out but I am glad you did as I never would be able to.
  • ThePhoenix Feb 21, 2008 @ 8:49 am | delete
Good stuff, GG. I have this bookmarked and faved for future use. I notice in the example just above (and other places here) the pic slips a little outside the color background. What about using a height attribute to make it fit better?
  • flowergardener Feb 21, 2008 @ 8:40 am | delete
Love it Greek, great job. I'll be watching for casts
