What Is Digital Signage?

 

  
Digital signage is a word that is becoming more and more
popular in the advertising industry, and especially in the area of out-of-home advertising.
It is still, however, a vague concept to most small business owners,
and the benefits are not always clear to those who actually consider a
digital signage implementation. They often ask what is digital signage
and what can it do for my business.



Digital Signage
is a rather broad term that covers a range of various applications and
technologies. In general, digital signage refers to electronic signs
such as a plasma display, which can be administered remotely without
the cost of physically changing a piece of signage.



Changing digital signage is cost effective and can be done in seconds
from one location. It allows the network user to send content to an
infinite number of displays at one time. Digital signage installations
can take the form of scrolling message boards, plasma screens, large
projection screens, as well as other display types such as organic LED.
Some digital signage have been changing the meaning of what is digital
signage by creating some unique installations. For example, there have
been some firms offering polarized projection film, which allows
high-contrast digital signage images to be projected directly onto
store windows.



Digital signage is normally implemented in high traffic areas,
and thus, it is important to go with a robust and stable digital
signage software package to ensure that the right messages appear at
the right times on the right displays.



As mentioned earlier, however, all of this digital signage technology
is useless if it does not produce some tangible benefit for the
locations that deploy digital signs. Businesses need to know what their
digital signage ROI will be before making the big decision. The
advertisers, content partners, and viewers also need to be able to
justify their involvement in the whole digital signage concept. This has
made return-on-investment a hot topic in the digital signage industry.
Those firms who can best show the benefit are winning the contracts.

Digital Signage Uses Expands 

With 2006 coming to an end, the digital signage industry is showing no signs of slowing down as the new advertising medium becomes more and more popular as a way for businesses to communicate with consumers. The phenomenon is not just sweeping North America. In fact, it is more popular in Australia and the UK than other regions. The Sofitel Hotel in Melbourne uses digital signage displays to provide its guests with directory boards full of information. The large NEC panel welcomes guests and showcases the hotel's many functions and services.

Victoria-based Architectural AV was chosen by Sofitel to integrate the digital signage solution. Owner and AV/IT specialist Mike Quinn says that "the panel hits you in the face. It directs you where to go, while displaying high-quality photos and important information." AV and IT specialist Mike Quinn, owner of Victoria-based Architectural AV, said. Sofitel has plans with Architectural AV to implement another five displays in various spaces in their hotel. They want the digital signage in conference facilities, reception areas, and major function rooms.

Architectural AV says that they are seeing an increased demand for digital signage solutions in the hospitality industry, and has plans to allocate more time and resources to the sector.

Hotels are not the only area where digital signage is changing the marketing landscape. Signage has major uses in cinemas, retail, night clubs, pubs, banks, airports, museums, and shopping malls are all welcoming the digtial signage technology with open arms. They are counting on it to help them get away from static signage and advertising that just blends and becomes a victim of ad blindness. Digital signage has been a way for businesses to offer various different messages from one location.
