Christmas Advent
Do You Celebrate Advent?
I think observing Advent is one of the best parts of the Christmas celebration. Why? Probably because it centers one around the true reason to have Christmas celebration at all: the birth of Jesus, His advent into the world. It brings the holiness and beauty of the holiday into perspective and focus.
That seems to infuse us with the promised peace and joy of this special time of year.
A look at the ways to bring this part of the church calender into our family traditions, this is a survey of how we can celebrate Advent in our homes, and understand the meaning of our Church traditions...

Advent is a Preparation
What is the History of Advent?
Advent is the preparation for celebrating Christmas and was a part of the Church calender, much like Lent is the preparation for the celebration of Easter. In my short summary of the history of Advent, it was noted about the different traditions: "the four weeks preceding Christmas were set aside to prepare with fasting and repentance. The Orthodox branch of the church has had a similar celebration which they call the "Nativity fast". The Orthodox observance is longer, approximately 40 days. A fast was a time of denial, repentance, and general solemnity. "
The word 'Advent' is from the Latin 'Adventus,' which means 'coming.' It celebrates the coming of Christ and begins the new liturgical (official Church observations) year. It may have begun as early as 590 AD to observe the Nativity of Christ (the birth of Jesus), and was originally a somber period of fasting, which explains the purple colors associated with it, and the remnant of traditions that include fish dinners, like the Feast of Seven Fishes. Fish was served during times when fasting from meat.
Liturgical colors:
"Purple can symbolize pain, suffering, and therefore mourning and penitence. " according to "The Meaning of Church Colors"
So, in its beginning form, Advent was more of a time to reflect on why Christ came, rather than on the happiness of the angels and the shepherds, or the gifts of the Magi. The joy of Christmas time preparations was to come much, much later. It was a time to consider the state of a world that had "no room at the Inn" and the low state of God's people under the hand of their conquerors.
The plainsong carol "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is probably the closest Christmas carol in feeling to this time.
Today, many colors are used for Advent wreaths, red or white being a common choice.
Now all of the activities leading to the Christmas celebrations are hallmarked by joy and joviality, but it was not originally observed in that way.
There are different customs and ways to mark this time, including the Advent Wreath, the Jesse Tree, and Advent Calenders. I hope to take a look at each in this lens.
The Wreath and Lutheran Symbolism
Known to originate in Eastern Germany among the Lutherans, and attributed to Martin Luther, the Advent Wreath is a common custom in many countries during the Christmas season -even when much of its symbolic meaning is unknown. Familiarize your family with the symbols of the Advent season and it will enrich your appreciation of these common decorations and activities.
- The Wreath is round,as a symbol of God's eternity and mercy.
- The Wreath is made of evergreens to symbolize that God is everlasting and promises us immortality in Christ.
- The Greens represent hope and new life.
- Four candles of purple represent penance, sorrow, and longing expectation; the rose one represents hope and anticipated joy.
- Continuing the candlelighting through the full Christmas seasons, they are replaced with white candles which are used until Epiphany.
Symbolic Meaning of the Greens:
· The Advent Wreath is made of various evergreens ever-life,
life everlasting. The circle of the wreath (like a wedding ring) has no beginning and has no end; eternal life through our Savior, Jesus Christ.
· Cedar represents healing and strength.
· Holly reminds us of the Crown of Thorns that were place on the head of Jesus at his crucifixion.
· Red Holly berries represent sacrifice, sacrificial love; the blood of Christ which was shed for us on the cross.
· Pinecones and nuts represent symbolize life and resurrection through Jesus Christ.
· Laurel represents victory over persecution, suffering, and death.

My Family's Tradition
The Advent Log
Our family, a number of years ago now, started a tradition of lighting candles for each day of Advent. We made our own Advent log, which holds the number of candles for that year (from 22 days to 28 days) depending on the day on which Christmas falls.
The Story of Our Advent Log
In the past few years I started writing devotionals for each day of Advent; the blogposts unfold like a Christmas Advent Calender, one day at a time.

What is a Jesse Tree?
The name "Jesse Tree" comes from Isaiah 11:1-2
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him-
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of power,
the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD

Tips for Including Little Children
- 1Keep the devotions short.
- 2Have activities. An inexpensive nativity set is a hands-on way to let children role play the Christmas story.
- 3Advent calenders and Jesse tree ornaments which create an exciting focus for each day in the countdown to Christmas are always loved by children,
- 4A few songs that children know are easily included with the Christmas carols. "Jesus loves me", Jesus loves the little children""I've got the joy, down in my heart" are a few.
- 5Keep the tone and the atmosphere relaxed and loose, especially for younger children. Encourage them to express themselves- tambourines with the music? Occasionally have a surprise treat after the devotions are finished.

Advent Today
How our celebration has changed
We no longer associate the preparation of Christmas with any other emotion except for excitement, happiness, and joy. Sometimes the entire event seems wrapped up with Christmas shopping, sending off Christmas cards, and baking cookies; but we can keep our joyful spirit while focusing on the deeper meaning of Christmas at the same time. It just means we must be more intentional about it.
Within the Advent calender pockets, or in our devotional readings, we can take the events which we now use to celebrate Christmas, the shopping and baking for example, and use them to spark thoughts about the coming of a Savior. Whether by contrast or comparison the gift of Christ can be our focus, if we plan for our hearts to be directed into the thoughtfulness and gratefulness inherent in the Christmas story.
Our Advent surprises can be inside each pocket of a homemade calender or using a purchased product, but they can remind us of some aspect of Christ, prophecy about him, or portion of the gospel record. It highlights our memories not only as children, but grown-ups on how much we are loved and how much joy is inside the beautiful story of Christ's coming.

- A beautiful feature on the advent traditions of Christmas. As I was growing up, the advent wreath was a central part of Christmas worship services. I appreciate all of the meaningful ideas and resources for keeping Christ in Christmas. Christmas blessings to you and your loved ones.
