Advent Wreath - A Christmas Tradition

What is Advent and what is an Advent Wreath?

Advent Dates for 2011

November 27 - First Sunday of Advent
December 4 - Second Sunday of Advent
December 11 - Third Sunday of Advent
December 18 - Fourth Sunday of Advent

The origins of the Advent wreath can be found in the folk practices of the pre-Christian Germanic peoples who, during the cold December darkness of Eastern Europe, gathered wreaths of evergreen and lighted fires as signs of hope in a coming spring and renewed light.

Christians kept these popular traditions alive, and by the 16th century Catholics and Protestants throughout Germany used these symbols to celebrate their Advent hope in Christ, the everlasting Light. From Germany the use of the Advent wreath spread to other parts of the Christian world.

Advent marks the start of the Christmas season for Christians around the world. It also marks the start of the Church year for many Western Churches. It begins on the Sunday nearest November 30, the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle, and lasts for four Sundays. The date Advent  begins changes from year to year.  As a result, so does the length of each Advent season.  For the year 2011 the start of Advent is Nov. 27th.

The word advent, from Latin, means "the coming." It is a time of spiritual reflection and prayer as well as cheer and anticipation. The home or family Advent devotion includes the ceremonial lighting of candles in the Advent wreath. The family celebrates Advent together with daily devotions and prayer in preparation and anticipation of Christmas, the birth of Christ.

There are many ways to make an Advent wreath and many are available commercially.  An Advent wreath was originally made from greens to symbolize continuous life and contains four candles— three purple and one rose. Often a fifth candle (white) is added to the center of the wreath for lighting on Christmas Eve, in celebration of the birth of Jesus.  Advent wreaths can be made from any material - the symbolism is in the candles and the prayers.  Below are some examples of how to use the Advent Wreath.

Advent, the beginning of the liturgical year in the Catholic Church, is a time of preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ at Christmas. It was historically known as "little Lent," because, like Lent, it is a time of repentance, with prayer, fasting, and Confession.

Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas Day, and therefore varies in length between 22 days and 28 days. (In 2011, it is 28 days long.) The following is a list of the dates of the Sundays in Advent as well as the major feast days that fall within Advent 2011.

* First Sunday of Advent (Sunday, November 27, 2011)

* Second Sunday of Advent (Sunday, December 4, 2011)

* Feast of Saint Nicholas (Tuesday, December 6, 2011)

* Immaculate Conception (Thursday, December 8, 2011)

* Our Lady of Guadalupe (Monday, December 12, 2011)

* Fourth Sunday of Advent (Sunday, December 18, 2011)

The Rite of Advent

Traditionally, the Advent wreath has five candles in a circle of evergreens. On the outside ring - three candles are violet and the fourth is rose, and the one in the center is white. Each day at home, the candles are lighted, perhaps before the evening meal or just after sunset . The first week only one purple candle is lit. Advent can be marked weekly or daily depending on family traditions. The second week two purple candles are lit. The third week the rose colored candle is lit along with the first two purple candles. And the last week all four candles are lit. Then on Christmas Day the 4 candles on the outside ring are lit and the white candle in the center is also lit in celebration of the birth of Christ, the baby Jesus.

Daily Prayers for Lighting the Advent Wreath

First Week

O Emmanuel, Jesus Christ,
desire of every nation,
Savior of all peoples,
come and dwell among us.

Second Week

O King of all nations, Jesus Christ,
only joy of every heart,
come and save your people.

Third Week

O Key of David, Jesus Christ,
the gates of heaven open at your command,
come and show us the way to salvation.

Fourth Week

O Wisdom, holy Word of God, Jesus Christ,
all things are in your hands,
come and show us the way to salvation.

A Rite for the Beginning of Advent at Home

The first day the wreath is in the home, the leader may say:

As our nights grow longer and our days grow short,
we look on these earthly signs--light and green branches--
and remember God's promise to our world:
Christ, our Light and our Hope, will come.
Listen to the words of Isaiah the prophet:

The people that walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those who lived in a land as dark as death
a light has dawned.
You have increased their joy
and given them gladness;
They rejoice in your presence
as those who rejoice at harvest,
as warriors exult when dividing spoil. Is. 9:1-2

Then all pray:

O God,
rejoicing,
we remember the promise of your Son.
As the light from this candle,
may the bless of Christ come upon us,
brightening our way
and guiding us by his truth.
May Christ our Savior bring life
into the darkness of our world,
and to us, as we wait for his coming.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Then the first candle is lighted.

Each day at home, the candles are lighted, perhaps before the evening meal -- one candle the first week, and then another each succeeding week until December 25th. The rose candle is usually lighted on the third Sunday of Advent. As the candles are lighted, a prayer may be said.

GOD IS IN THE MANGER

ADVENT

GOD IS IN THE MANGER: REFLECTIONS ON ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS by DIETRICH BONHOEFFER

I realize this is January but I wanted to let you know about a book I read during Advent and Christmas. I have been looking for a good Advent book for a long time and I have found it.

This little book is divided into 5 parts:
* Advent Week One--Waiting
* Advent Week Two-- Mystery
* Advent Week Three--Redemption
* Advent Week Four-- Incarnation
* The Twelve Days of Christmas and Epiphany

Reading devotional literature by Dietrich Bonhoeffer can be challenging. But God is in the Manger opens up the gospel and will take you to the heart of the Christmas story.

Most of these devotions are taken from writings during the time Bonhoeffer was being held in a Nazi prison cell. Also included with each day's reading are short excerpt from Bonhoeffer's letters and passages from his Christmas sermons.

The Advent Conspiracy

From the Advent Conspiracy Website:

"The story of Christ's birth is a story of promise, hope, and a revolutionary love.

So, what happened? What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists.

And when it's all over, many of us are left with presents to return, looming debt that will take months to pay off, and this empty feeling of missed purpose. Is this what we really want out of Christmas?

What if Christmas became a world-changing event again?

Welcome to Advent Conspiracy."
The Advent Conspiracy
People are dying from the lack of clean water. In fact, it's the leading cause of death in under resourced countries. 1.8 million people die every year from water born illnesses. That includes 3,900 children a day. The solution to this problem is directly beneath our feet. Drilling a fresh water well is a relatively inexpensive, yet permanent solution to this epidemic. $10 will give a child clean water for life. That's not an estimate. It's a fact. And here's another fact: Solving this water problem once and for all will cost about $10 billion. Not bad considering Americans spent $450 billion on Christmas last year. Our hope is that, by celebrating Christ in a new way at Christmas, the church can serve as the leading movement behind ending the water crisis once and for all.

Advent Conspiracy asks that every church and organization who participates in this program give at least 25% of their offering to the water/redistribution project of their choice. For three years, Advent Conspiracy has partnered with Living Water International to help solve this problem. Oh, and no money comes through Advent Conspiracy.

What is a Jessee Tree?

ADVENT

The Jesse Tree is named from Isaiah 11:1: "A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots." It is a vehicle to tell the Story of God in the Old Testament, and to connect the Advent Season with the faithfulness of God across 4,000 years of history. The Branch is a biblical sign of newness out of discouragement, which became a way to talk about the expected messiah (for example, Jer 23:5). It is therefore an appropriate symbol of Jesus the Christ, who is the revelation of the grace and faithfulness of God.

Editorial Review
Even children know that Christmas is much more than a day of opening gifts; it is a full season of festivities, magic, and traditions. One of the most beloved traditions of all is the keeping of an Advent calendar--the process of counting down the days to Christ's birth, one delight at a time. This hanging, cloth calendar has embroidered, numbered pockets for all 24 days. In each pocket someone (an elf, fairy, or angel?) places a soft, fabric-covered symbol of the Nativity--a stuffed donkey or lamb, a richly embroidered wise man, a shining North Star, or the angel, Gabriel. Children will love finding these decorative gifts in the pockets. Or they may enjoy being the deliverers themselves, choosing a symbol for each day of the Advent. This makes a lovely and lasting holiday decoration. --Gail Hudson
