Advertise anywhere! Run contextual PPC ads on any site that allows image embedding.
Ranked #48,773 in Internet, #1,456,670 overall
Contextual advertising on most popular social networking sites.
Let me just start out by saying that there are places that advertising doesn't belong and some webmasters may take offense to the use of unconventional advertising, do so at your own risk. Generally, don't be obnoxious with your ads and you'll be alright.
Getting Started
Sign up for a Q-ads account
First of all, sign up for a Q-ads account at Adgenta. Then download the Q-Ads plugin for FireFox, Internet Explorer, or LiveWriter. If you are using a supported blogging platform you can use the Qumana blog editor to strategically place ads inside your blog posts with minimal effort, but personally I prefer the FireFox plugin, which allows you to place ads pretty much anywhere (not just on your blog).
Placing Ads
I'll be providing some general examples and suggestions for ad placement on various platforms, but I recommend that you read through the Q-ads FAQ/Help pages for the finer points of installation and implementation.
General placement
1.)Find a place to put your ad. This entails a site that allows posting of simple html code, and allows the use of images that do not end with a file extension
(e.g. http://site.com/photo.php?photoID) Some sites only accept image embedding if the url ends with .jpg, .png, .gif, etc.
2.)Once you've found a suitable place, click the Q-Ads icon on your browser toolbar to open the ad configuration menu (fig.1) There you can modify the elements of your ad to fit your layout and theme.
3.)After you've configured the ad unit to your liking, copy your code and paste it in the appropriate place.
4.)Profit!
Pretty neat right? That's the default rotating ad, live, right in the middle of my post, no javascript, no frames. If you scroll over it you'll see that each individual pixel has it's own variable, which maps to a url based on the position of your mouse when you click on the ad.
Social Networks
Social networks have huge audiences, but few (if any) allow javascript or frames due to security concerns, this limits your money making opportunities to spammy referral/affiliate linking, selling banner space, etc. That's where Q-Ads comes in, as far as I know, Q-Ads is the only PPC (pay per click) advertiser that offers publishers advertising "sans script", meaning that you can post contextual advertising on most of these sites.
Placement is key to the success of your ads on these sites, an image ad in a the space that's reserved for your description of yourself is not likely to be well received by social network audiences. Try to blend your adverts into your interests. I've had success in placing an advert at the bottom of a list of my musical interests, movies I like, etc.
Another way to blend your adverts is to make it look as if they were placed by the site itself, taking care to emulate the colors and layout of existing ads and placing them in a consistent manner in familiar places (google ads are so common-place now, most anywhere will do). A popular placement option is the "break", the area directly above the fold on the page. If you're trying to make it look like site generated advertising you can add the standard disclaimer at the top to make it look more authentic, like so:
On sites that allow users to attach stylesheets or use custom CSS/Javascript/frames you may be able to place ads outside the normal boundaries of user generated content, or replace a CSS controlled element. Resist the urge to replace the site's adverts with your own, while it's doable, it is not recommended. Again, use you're own judgment for your ad placement. If in doubt, ask someone in charge.

Top sites
I've compiled a list of some of the top social networking sites that Q-Ads will work on, notable one's they won't work on, and any special instructions for posting if needed. Be assured that there are many more sites that are a viable platform for posting ads. I'll add to this list as I discover new sites compatible with the Q-Ads platform. If you know of an up and coming social networking site, or you need help posting ad code on a site not listed here, please mention it in the comments.
- FaceBook - To post Q-Ads on FaceBook you need to use the My Box application.
- MySpace - When I started writing this article Q-Ads worked on MySpace, as of Feb.11, due to security restrictions and url redirection, it no longer works. Oh well, there's enough ads on MySpace as it is.
- Hi5 - It's possible to post ads to Hi5 but with it's limited CSS and HTML you'll have to change the Q-Ads code, which may be against the TOS. More information on making clickable images through CSS can be found here
- StumbleUpon - No problems posting on StumbleUpon, ads can be placed in blog posts only. Though I doubt users will respond well, advertising may elicit a hostile response from SU. Personally, I would not use Q-Ads on SU. You've been warned.
- Xanga - Xanga supports extensive HTML, CSS, and some javascript. Ads work fine.
- Orkut - Q-Ads does not work on Orkut.
- Windows Live Spaces - Ad placement works perfectly in blog postings.
-
Squidoo - Obviously working just fine ;)
Alternative places to advertise
If you aren't satisfied with the traffic a billion+ people on the social networks above can bring, here's a couple other ideas.
- Forums - There's millions of them, on most you'll probably have to translate your html tags to BB code, here is a HTML to BBCode converter. If allowed, ads can be placed in your signature.
- Ebay - You can slip in a couple targeted ads between your item description/photos.
- Friend Finder and it's clones - Descriptions generally don't allow image embedding, but Friend Finder allows html postings in user blogs. Remember that adult sites are forbidden by the Q-Ads TOS.
- CraigsList - CraigsList supports basic html and image embedding, Q-ads should work just fine in most cases, while it's not strictly forbidden in CL's term of service to place advertisements in posts, you should take care to post real content in the appropriate section along with your ads.
