Yeah, who would not like FREE??? Fact is that free, comes with a penalty -->> poor. Everyone should know by now that advertising is expensive. Heck, we live in the 20th century now...
There is a direct proportionality between cost and quality, and this kills most of the businesses online. (my humble opinion)
  • ajlumb Apr 5, 2012 @ 5:08 am | delete
A big help thanks. I'm working hard to get my business website noticed but it's not easy.
  • SimonHaestoe Apr 3, 2012 @ 10:13 am | delete
WOW - this is huge. I'm new to squidoo:ing and I can definitely tell people bring real effort to creating them (this one must've taken several hours). I love this:
"and won't ruin your reputation like high cost ads can." Talk about change, that must take place in big companies, when exposed to that fact...god. Anyway: would love if you checked out my lens, about things to consider/do before starting an online business, and liked/left a comment (I'm sure that would up my ranking a bit :P). Anyway: superb lens!

Oh, and I have heard that there are businesses doing marketing on Amazon - anybody has insights into that?

Nice lens! I created my first e-commerce business in 1999. In 2000 I created a forum around the topic of the business. Five years later I had 50,000 members, many of them customers. I also created a blog and an ebook about the business topic to drive even more traffic. After six years in business I was shipping 1,200 to 1,800 orders per month, and I never paid for advertising.

Yes, this is all very good information. I am realizing that I need to find my favorite subject and build on it somehow, something I'm comfortable with that I think I can help people with.

The idea of a competition sounds great, I'm going to do some serious thinking on that, how to go about it. "The Best Gadgets" ?? I wonder if I can get some help there?

    Interesting read.
The problem with internet marketing and social networking is that google (the main source of calls) is constantly moving the marker and altering its algorithm, This can see webmasters jumping through hoops to constantly keep above water. Its not easy and i spend at least 2 hours a day re optimizing my sites and adverts

Great lens. Marketing today is changing so fast. But what's not changing is the fact that consumers are doing research online before they make a purchase. So a website is imperative, whether it's through a blog or a traditional five page site.

This is a really nice lens. Have a question about eBay. I used to sell dog products through an eBay store but didn't know about using the About Me page to send people to my site or blog.

Question: Can you send visitors to an affiliate site or blog About Me page? I know you can't send them to a page that sells products but not sure about a About page on a site with products.

    thanks for sharing your lens

The wonderful world of the internet such as facebook, youtube, websites and media can really help you to promote your products and give you free advertising if you have cool and new designs. The Eccentric designer Ego the founder of the company Egotist Couture and the limited edition England t-shirts 'No One But England' is one who seems to be benefiting from free advertising on and off line. His marketing is very creative and very intelligently done. He markets himself by travelling to different places in Europe and hands out his t-shirts to people who he deems will appreciate his fashion thus creating a small cult of curious Egotist followers who promote his products to friends and others. He gives free designer t shirts, hoodies and sweat tops on the condition that you tell ten friends and mention him online.

Great Lens showing people how to increase website traffic for free. I am new
to making blogs and stuff but did start one to help people
    increase website traffic
but sometimes find it hard to write new posts. Could I used some
of your increase website traffic tips for posts on my blog?
  • kiwisoutback Jan 14, 2010 @ 1:49 pm | delete
Dot Net Guru - I don't have a problem with you linking to my post here, but I would advise you not to copy and paste anything on the web. I would try putting your own spin on things, then linking to the original content. Read up elsewhere on other similar sites, then link to all of them. Tell readers what you think of each post, what you did and did not like, and add some other resources that they can use. It can be a learning experience for both you and your readers. They'll appreciate your honesty as you learn, and you'll be learning in the process. Best of luck! Feel free to return back and tell us how you are doing.

While I believe that traditional advertising does work for some larger corporations (or they would stop using it) this lens is a great resource for smaller businesses without multi-million dollar advertising budgets. The internet empowers us to get our message out and I appreciate how you've focused on off-beat, free ways to do our own advertising. There are a few tips I haven't even thought of. Thanks!

Great site with lots of helpful ideas that really work.

However, but I think the influence of subliminal advertising,NLP, etc. that traditional branding type advertising uses is not really understood. The half-time ads at the Superbowl are not going away any time soon.

However it is cool to realize what "the litttle guy" we can get accomplished in such a little bit of time with these methods.

Who can turn down free advertising? Of course the problem with many of these tactics is it takes time to do them. You either need to make time or pay someone to do it. So it is not totally free but for the cost involved I think it is worth it.

Advertising is definitely effective. I think Taco Bell is one of the best at the game. There aren't very complicated, but their commercials always seem to come on at the right time. I always find myself thinking about how great Taco Bell would be right after I see the commercial. Ignorance is bliss, so I wouldn't have been as hungry if I had missed those commercials.

Very insightful. I agree wholly that if you're not using free social media sites for your online marketing you're leaving a lot of traffic on the table. I still find old school article writing to be worth it's weight in gold (still) for free traffic, but socila media websites are a great supplement. Thanks.
