Diversify
I'm sure that you've heard the expression don't put all of your eggs in one basket. That statement couldn't be more true than for personal trainers. Many personal trainers rely solely on their hourly rate to make up their income. These are the trainers who work too hard and aren't sufficiently rewarded for all they do. Sure the client is paying for an hour of your time, but think about all of the preparation you do; researching and writing workout programs, traveling to the gym, and countless hours you spend training your own body.In order to maximize your potential income you have to use your knowledge and connections to branch out to other areas of the industry. There are infinite possibilities and they are only limited by your imagination. One way is to become a supplement distributor. It's an easy way to quickly start supplementing your income. Your clients will appreciate the added service you offer and you'll save them time and money.
Another way would be to write eBooks and sell them online to your current clients, or better yet, the millions of people surfing the internet for health information online.
Follow Trends
By staying on top of trends you can adjust to what the market is asking for. For instance, the area of active aging is rapidly growing. These are the baby boomers who want to stay healthy and enjoy their retirement. It just so happens that this demographic has a great deal of disposable income. Do your homework and know where the industry is headed.
How can I help you?
Tell me where I should focus my energy on by voting on the following poll.
Educate Yourself
The more tools you possess the higher the chances of succeeding. Personal training is a highly competitive field and clients will love the variety you bring to the table.
Take the Free Personal Trainer Business Bootcamp to ramp up your education right now!
Insurance
Make sure that your policy has great liability coverage, offers rehabilitation to your clients and also protects you from sexual harassment. Without insurance, everything you have worked incredibly hard to achieve could be wiped out with one false move by a client. It is also wise to keep your CPR/First Aid courses up to date.
The chances of someone needing CPR are minimal but you never know. You must know what to do if the situation ever presents itself.
Health and Fitness Books
Community Involvement
Use your winning attitude and charm to keep a steady stream of clients in your schedule.

Communication
Listen to what they have to say and use it to help them achieve their goals.
Workshops and Conventions
Take the time to talk to anyone and everyone. Exchange business cards and contact information. When you get home add everyone you met to your contact list. This way if you have a client who needs a service outside of your training scope, you can point them in the right direction. Your client will appreciate the help and your contact will keep you in mind next time someone is looking for a personal trainer.
Freebies
Have a contract ready to be signed that also includes a waiver to protect yourself. The legalities aren't the most fun part of the job but they are a must. This way there isn't any confusion as to what they are paying per session and how many times per week they are training with you. It is important to be clear on cancellations. Tell them that they must give you at least 24 hours notice or they still have to pay for the session. Too many cancellations in any given week could cripple your business if you let them get away with it.
Free sessions for referrals are an awesome way to have other people do some legwork for you. They will be sure to talk about your services to their network of friends. Word of mouth goes a long way and it doesn't cost you a dime.

- If I may add an advice for aspiring personal trainers: LOVE THE JOB. Enjoy it. I know a few trainers who ended up too soon simply because they got tired of it already. Geez.
