Diversify

I'm sure that you've heard the expression don't put all of your eggs in one basket. That statement couldn't be more true than for personal trainers. Many personal trainers rely solely on their hourly rate to make up their income. These are the trainers who work too hard and aren't sufficiently rewarded for all they do. Sure the client is paying for an hour of your time, but think about all of the preparation you do; researching and writing workout programs, traveling to the gym, and countless hours you spend training your own body.

In order to maximize your potential income you have to use your knowledge and connections to branch out to other areas of the industry. There are infinite possibilities and they are only limited by your imagination. One way is to become a supplement distributor. It's an easy way to quickly start supplementing your income. Your clients will appreciate the added service you offer and you'll save them time and money.

Another way would be to write eBooks and sell them online to your current clients, or better yet, the millions of people surfing the internet for health information online.

Follow Trends

It's easy to get caught up in the routine of life and not pay attention to what is going on around you. Keep your finger in the pulse of the industry. Stay current on what is hot and where people are spending their fitness dollar. If you aren't aware of the trends you might not realize that your area of expertise is dropping in demand.

By staying on top of trends you can adjust to what the market is asking for. For instance, the area of active aging is rapidly growing. These are the baby boomers who want to stay healthy and enjoy their retirement. It just so happens that this demographic has a great deal of disposable income. Do your homework and know where the industry is headed.

Educate Yourself

Continuing your education will ultimately earn you more money. The more certifications you hold the higher your value becomes. Why not be a personal trainer/yoga instructor/dietician/football coach?

The more tools you possess the higher the chances of succeeding. Personal training is a highly competitive field and clients will love the variety you bring to the table.

Insurance

Whether you work for a gym or for yourself it is very important to have adequate insurance to protect yourself from lawsuits. You don't want to lose all that you have built because a client gets injured.

Make sure that your policy has great liability coverage, offers rehabilitation to your clients and also protects you from sexual harassment. Without insurance, everything you have worked incredibly hard to achieve could be wiped out with one false move by a client. It is also wise to keep your CPR/First Aid courses up to date.

The chances of someone needing CPR are minimal but you never know. You must know what to do if the situation ever presents itself.

Community Involvement

The best proactive client recruitment tool you have is to be involved in the community. There are many ways you can put yourself out there. Join a recreation or competitive sports league, volunteer, coach, or start a running program. The more people you know the better off you'll be. Remember that you are selling yourself as a person just as much as you are selling your services.

Use your winning attitude and charm to keep a steady stream of clients in your schedule.

Follow Your Own Advice

It is easy to dispense advice but do you follow what you tell others? The best way to teach your clients is to lead by example. Make sure that you are eating right, training hard and getting adequate rest. If you fail to follow what you tell your clients, chances are that they won't listen to what you have to say.

Practice what you preach.

Communication

Communication is a vital part of your business. You want to have excellent two-way communication between yourself and your clients. Don't just tell them what to do. You have to listen to find out what their needs are. What outcomes do they want from training? How are they feeling? What is standing in the way of their way of success?

Listen to what they have to say and use it to help them achieve their goals.

Workshops and Conventions

Workshops and conventions are a great way to sharpen your skills and meet other like-minded individuals in the industry. These contacts you make are invaluable to your long-term success. You'd be surprised at how many business opportunities arise over the course of a weekend convention.

Take the time to talk to anyone and everyone. Exchange business cards and contact information. When you get home add everyone you met to your contact list. This way if you have a client who needs a service outside of your training scope, you can point them in the right direction. Your client will appreciate the help and your contact will keep you in mind next time someone is looking for a personal trainer.

Freebies

Everyone loves something for nothing. Offer first time clients a free evaluation or existing clients a free session for referring new clients. It's a cost effective way to add new clients to your schedule. Use the evaluation sessions to show off your great personality and qualifications. Be thorough and have all the necessary paperwork ready. A handshake and a promise aren't enough.

Have a contract ready to be signed that also includes a waiver to protect yourself. The legalities aren't the most fun part of the job but they are a must. This way there isn't any confusion as to what they are paying per session and how many times per week they are training with you. It is important to be clear on cancellations. Tell them that they must give you at least 24 hours notice or they still have to pay for the session. Too many cancellations in any given week could cripple your business if you let them get away with it.

Free sessions for referrals are an awesome way to have other people do some legwork for you. They will be sure to talk about your services to their network of friends. Word of mouth goes a long way and it doesn't cost you a dime.
