Adwords Wrapper - Exact Match, Phrase Match and more

The first keyword wrapper tools came about in response to Adwords match types.

Adwords users needed an easy way to mark keywords for match types. A match type is defines how your keyword relates to a Google search term.

Exact Match
Exact Match is the easiest keyword search term relationship to understand. You mark a keyword for exact match by enclosing it in square brackets. Here, you are instructing Google to show your ad when the keyword phrase and only the keyword phrase is search for. It is an extremely targeted match. You know exactly what was searched for.

Phrase Match
Phrase Match is the next level in match types. It is denoted by enclosing the keyword phrase in double quotes. You are telling Google to show your Ad whenever the keyword phrase appears in part of the search term. This means you will not know what the search term was. But, as long as your keyword phrase is targeted, you can be sure the search term is targeted.

Broad Match
Broad Match is the default match type. Keywords with brackets, quotes or minus signs are broad match keywords. Google will display you add for an combination of you keyword phrase words. It is extremely untargeted and can cause your ad to appear for many unrelated search terms.

NOTE: You almost never want to use broad match. In fact, I don't use it all. I don't recommend you use it.

Negative Match
Negative Match is a different animal. You signify negative match by putting a minus sign in front of your keywords. This tells Google NOT to display your ad for a search containing the keyword phrase. You qualify your ad impression by saying you don't your ad displayed for certain searches. A good example is the keyword free. Many times you don't want your ad to appear for searches looking for free stuff. Negative match is useful when using Phrase Matches, but isn't necessary when using Exact Match.

As you can see, there are several Adwords keyword match types. Each match type has different delimiters. Adwords wrapper tools evolve to make the process of managing keywords easier.

A good Adwords Wrapper allows you to pick what match types you want, and then it wraps the kewyords in the appropiate delimiters. You may have multiple match types per keyword, in which case a good tool duplicates the keywords for you.

Adwords Wrapper - Keyword Modifiers and combining keyword lists

You may find that you have main list of keywords, plus a list of adjectives. To create long tail keyword phrase, you append each adjective to each keyword, creating one big list with every possible combination. A list of adjectives is called a keyword modifier list.

For example, imagine your keywords are "table" and "chair". You could have an additional set of keywords like "oak" and "maple". These keywords are modifiers or prefixes of your main keywords. The end result would combining all prefixes and keywords, demonstrated in the table below.

oak table
oak chair
maple table
maple chair

Another example of keyword modifiers would be major metropolitan cities. City modifiers would work well with keywords like attorney and lawyer.

Manually combining every keyword with every modifier would be difficult. A good keyword wrapper will combine keyword lists for you.

Adwords Wrapper - Keyword Level CPCs and Destination Urls.

When you add keywords to an ad group, you can include additional information like a Max CPC and Destination URL for the keyword. The format of such keyword is...

keyword ** MaxCPC ** DestinationURL

You are also allowed to omit the MaxCPC if you wish, and have...

keyword ** DestinationURL

For example, you could have...

MyKeyword ** http://www.MyDomain.com/LandingPage.aspx

A good keyword tool allows you to generate the keyword list in this syntax. The tool also needs to allow you to generate unique destination urls.
