Learning to soar with silks

"Aerial Tissu is the art of suspended dance. It is grace and beauty incarnate. At times static, at times dynamic, and at all times mesmerizing, this acrobatic performance art captivates its audiences.

Known by many names, it is sometimes called Flying Silks, Aerial Tissue, Aerial Silk, Aerial Chiffon, Aerial Fabric, Aerial Curtain, and Aerial Dance, among others. Tissu means fabric in French and is a fitting description for this cirque-inspired dance form because the performers dance on long fabric silks." - from aerialtissu.com

Aerial and Circus Arts, Contortion and not a little bit of Clowning around. Come to California's bay area and get your feet off the ground. Have you always wanted to dance in midair? Does it sound nice to get up above it all? Be like a bird.. a plane?

Many of these area schools also have performances. They offer a variety of classes that can add a whole new excitement to helping get your kids -- or yourself -- off of that couch.

Site Dance: Choreographers and the Lure of Alternative Spaces

Explore dance outside the theater with the world's most innovative choreographers "Kloetzel and Pavlik have created a valuable resource, documenting a wide range of site-specific dance events through a combination of interviews, practitioners' accounts, and stunning images. This volume raises useful questions about the politics of art's interventions into the public realm and gives insight into the pragmatic challenges of making site dance." -- Fiona Wilkie, Roehampton University

In recent years, site-specific dance has grown in popularity. In the wake of groundbreaking work by choreographers who left traditional performance spaces for other venues, more and more performances are cropping up on skyscrapers, in alleyways, on trains, on the decks of aircraft carriers, and in a myriad of other unexpected locations worldwide.

In Site Dance: Choreographers and the Lure of Alternative Spaces, the first anthology to examine site-specific dance, editors Melanie Kloetzel and Carolyn Pavlik explore the work that choreographers create for nontraditional performance spaces and the thinking behind their creative choices. Combining interviews with and essays by some of the most prominent and influential practitioners of site dance, they look at the challenges and rewards of embracing alternative spaces.

The close examinations of the work of artists like Meredith Monk, Joanna Haigood, Stephan Koplowitz, Heidi Duckler, Ann Carlson, and Eiko Otake provide important insights into why choreographers leave the theatre to embrace the challenges of unconventional venues.

Site Dance also includes more than 80 photographs of site-specific performances, revealing how the arts, and movement in particular, can become part of and speak to our everyday lives. Celebrating the often unexpected beauty and juxtapositions created by site dance, the book is essential reading for anyone curious about the way that these choreographers are changing our experience of the world one step at a time.

Melanie Kloetzel is associate professor of dance at the University of Calgary. Carolyn Pavlik is assistant professor of dance at Western Michigan University. -- Amazon

Aerial Silks

Wikipedia

Aerial silk (also known as aerial contortion, aerial ribbons, aerial silks, aerial tissues, fabric, ribbon, or tissu, depending on regional preference)[1] is a type of performance in which one or more artists perform aerial acrobatics while suspended by a special fabric. The performer climbs the suspended fabric without the use of safety lines, and rely only on their training and skill to ensure safety. The performer uses the fabric to wrap, suspend, fall, swing, and spiral their body into and out of various positions. Aerial silks may be used to fly through the air, striking poses and figures while flying. Routines are an exciting display of athleticism, coordination and flexibility.

About the apparatus

The following information is for academic reference only. Any physical activity taking place off the ground carries a high level of risk of injury or death if not practiced with proper training and supervision.

Rigging

As with any kind of technical rigging, it is crucial for reasons of safety and liability that only professionally trained personnel set up and rig any acrobatic apparatus.

Selecting fabrics

The fabrics used as silks are incredibly strong with some give and flexibility. The width varies, depending on the routine and the acrobat. The fabric is usually quite long, as it is doubled for rigging, giving the acrobat two strips of fabric to work with as he or she performs.

Fabric under the name of 'tricot chiffon' is most commonly used by performers, though fabrics which have this name do vary. Another common choice is polyester interlock. When selecting fabric, there are a number of issues one must take into account.
