The first thing you should think about is whether you are going to promote your own products, or promote products that other people have already made.

My advice to you is to start learning the ropes by promoting products other people have already developed. Look what they have done, learn from their mistakes, and once you build up the confidence, you can venture into developing your own products.

- Get a Google Adsense Account - To do this, click on the Google Adsense Button in the left hand menu. Google has a lot of tutorials on how to use Adsense, so ensure you go through these carefully.

- Get some hosting space - In order to build a website, you will need some hosting space to make your website seem on the World Wide Web. The best way to explain Hosting, is like the monthly amount you pay for your phone bill. The Domain name (eg. www.goinglarge.org) is like your phone number. For people to get to it, they can look you up in a directory (such as Google, or Yahoo!), or they can enter the name directly into their browser.

The hosting of your site is like the line rental you pay to your phone company every month. If you dont pay this line rental for a month or two, your phone will be disconnected, and no one will be able to dial your number!

There are many hosting companies out there, so choosing the right one can be very difficult. Check out BlueHost.com. They have some very cheap hosting plans, and you also get a FREE domain name with your hosting purchase, plus FREE Yahoo and Google Credit! You will be using Yahoo and Google a lot later on, so this credit could come in handy!

- Sign up to Affiliate Programs - If you are to promote products that other people have created, you need to find places to sign up to these affiliates. Some site owners run their own affiliate programs directly from their own website, but the majority tend to use a third party service such as Click Bank or Commission Junction to handle this for them.

- Learn how these Affiliate Programs work - The best way to learn how affiliate programs work, is to start using them! Just jump right in and learn about how they pay commissions, how you can register for Affiliate Programs, and how to start earning money with these Affiliates. Another great way to do this is to register to forums, where people discuss their experiences with certain programs. Here you will get a good idea of what works and what doesn't work. But remember, the forums are only people's opinions, DONT treat this as gospel!. Affiliate marketing is such a wonderful way to make money online if you do not have any products of your own, or, if you are like me, and have products of your own, but need an additional item or two here and there to offer your customers, then you can still make some extra money.

But how do you do it? I can tell you one way NOT to do it. I see this all the time, and it is just downright wrong. I see people directing their article links or their PPC links directly to the affiliate site. That is great for the affiliate site owner, because, especially if he has an opt in box, not only is he making the sales (which is fair, he pays you the commission), but he also is collecting the email addresses of the people you send him - for which he is not paying you!

So why don't you send your visitors to YOUR squeeze page, collect their email address, THEN send them to the affiliate site - now, if they buy, you get paid, if they do not, you can send them an email once a week or so, sending them to another affiliate site, and get paid again, every single week?

That is the way I do it. That is the way the experts do it. They do not send their traffic directly to an affiliate site.

By the way, who always makes money when you do things wrong with your affiliate marketing? The affiliate site owner does, every time you send him a visitor - especially if he adds that visitor to his email list.

1) Always choose high profit margin products.

In fact, "content network" is good for merchants since they get branding from their affiliates for their company and products.

4) Never target the first spot!.

It has been proved that the fourth or fifth spot are more profitables. While you get less click at the fourth position, your adwords campaign's ROI (return on investment) will be higher than the ad in the first position.

Why? Because many of the surfers are searching for information, and they will click on several paid ads before making their choice.

When they click down (fourth position), they already saw the competition, and at this point, they have an idea of what they want. They are more likely to buy through your affiliate links.

In order to be successful with online marketing you need to have the following:

- Lead Capture Pages

- Affiliate Websites

- Follow-Up Messages

A tiny bit more work, but well worth the effort. They are FREE...and anyone can get started here with NO cash! I also have a Blog on Blogger.com which of course is owned by Google. Your Blog will get indexed very quickly by Google so having links on your Blog to your other sites will get them indexed as well!

Another method is submitting ads on USFreeAds as Google likes this site as well. Now you can join for free but you will get better results for the small fee of $9.95 per month. You can place allot of ads on USFreeAds, and to get the ads higher positions on the Search Engines all you have to do is put a link for the ad in your Articles! Starting to get the picture now!

There are lots of other ways to generate Free Targeted traffic but the above methods I feel are the best and are where you should concentrate for getting traffic. If you submit good quality articles rich with applicable keywords you will find allot of good traffic visiting your site. The above methods do take some time but little if no money required. By not having to pay allot of money for traffic will increase your profit margins greatly!

While most people are rightfully concerned about how to succeed when they start an affiliate marketing business, they often overlook major pitfalls that can seriously derail their chances at making the kind of money they are hoping for.

There are many mistakes made by beginning affiliate marketers, but I believe there are 5 mistakes in particular that should be avoided.

1. Not Testing or Tracking I am constantly surprised by how often I see marketers who are not testing or tracking. When asked why, they often say they will get to it "later" or say they don't understand its importance or how to do it.

Without testing/tracking you are shooting in the dark, and often will have no idea why something is or isn't working. Testing can be as easy as running multiple ads per ad group in Adwords or split-testing the landing page you are sending traffic to.

Tracking is also extremely important and is easily doable. With the many available tracking softwares - some free - there is no excuse for not knowing where your traffic is coming from and how it is converting.

2. Not Preselling Your job as an affiliate is not to sell, but you should absolutely be preselling. What is preselling? Getting your visitor in the state of mind where they are predisposed to buy once they click on your affiliate link and land on the merchant's site.

Many merchant sites are lousy at converting visitors to sales but with preselling you can increase the odds that the prospect will buy, which allows you to spend more on getting traffic to the site than anyone else.

Preselling is best done with emotion; getting your prospect excited or curious is a great way to put them in the "buying" state. Reveal your personal experiences with the product, if any, using emotional language or get the prospect to imagine the difference in their lives once they are the proud owner of the product you are promoting.

3. Not building a list I am sure you have heard this a million times so I won't spend a lot of time on it. You can make money as an affiliate marketer without building a list but that's like boxing with one arm tied behind your back. Why would you want to do that? It's so much more difficult.

Build a list of prospects interested in the niche you want to promote and then establish a relationship with them.

4. Using Black Hat Black Hat refers to using techniques designed to manipulate your search engine rankings that specifically violate the terms of service of those search engines. Now, I am not personally opposed to Black Hat methods on any sort of "ethical" grounds, I just think that the vast majority of affiliate marketers will only hurt themselves by using these methods.

Using Black Hat requires some sophisticated knowledge and often requires significant resources in software and other expenses, like hosting. In this area, a little bit of knowledge is definitely a dangerous thing. You will almost certainly get caught by the search engines, resulting in your sites getting banned and your efforts going to waste.

5. Using Spam This one should be obvious in this day and age, but there are still far too many people trying spam because they haven't figures out how to market legitimately. This is almost surely going to be a waste of time and will ultimately result in getting your sites banned and possibly having legal action taken against you. Don't do it.

Most Internet marketers start out by being an affiliate marketer, selling other people's products. This a reasonable strategy because affiliate marketing offers many benefits including:

* No fulfillment costs
* Quick time to market
* Huge product selection
* Few, if any, customer service issues

However, if you ask most affiliate marketers, you would find that they are not satisfied with their commissions. Why is this?

The answer is in understanding the concept of front-end vs. backend marketing. The front-end product (usually a low- priced eBook in ClickBank) is usually sold to create a qualified lead, who is then offered an upsell to a higher end product (such as a ticket to a live event or a coaching program). This is the BIGGEST secret of marketing and world class marketers such as Mike Filsaime, Dan Kennedy, and Jay Abraham have used this concept to make millions for themselves and for their clients.

Since most affiliate marketers don't understand this concept, they continue to try to sell more low-end products to increase their commissions when in reality, they should be offering an immediate upsell for a higher-end product. Using the upsell technique of higher-end products has some advantages over selling more low-end products:

* You don't have to grow your list
* You can get make more money immediately vs. having to wait for new sales to come in
* That customer is statistically 10 times more likely to buy from you again because he's made 2 purchases vs. a single purchase

In many cases, the sale of a single higher product is the equivalent of selling 5 or more of the original product.

Let's take a quick example. Let's assume that you're selling a $20 product and getting a 50% commission [you would then make $10 per sale]. To get to $500 dollars, you would have to sell 50 copies of this product.

Now, let's assume that you offer a $200 product upsell [as an affliate and you get 50% on this as well] as soon as the customer buys. Even if only 10% of your buyers take the upsell, you would get an additional $100 per sale. Of course, you have to seek out joint venture partners that offer higher end products but those are easy to find.

Let's quickly compare your commission then after 10 sales:
* 10 sales x $10 commission per sale = $100
* 10 sales x $10 commission per sale = $100 + 1 upsell commission of $100 = $200

You have doubled your affiliate marketing commission with the same amount of effort and without having to grow your list! A 10% upsell is very doable because the best time to sell somebody is when they just bought.

I hope that simple example illustrates how you can double your affiliate marketing business, even without growing your list.
