Do you promote you first? 

If not you should start today

Now I run an affiliate program and probably shouldn't even write this article ;-). After all it is to my advantage as a product owner to let you keep making this simple mistake. But my conscience would bother me so I guess I will finish this article.

First understand that affiliate marketing can be a great way to build a business done right. Unfortunately, most new marketers don't understand the right way, they want the easy way.

Let me tell you that the easy way works to the owner of the products advantage. You need to capture your customer first.

Let's take a quick look at what happens if you don't take the time to set up a sales process and just send your potential customer to an affiliate page.

You end up either making a sale or the person leaves and does nothing.

We will look at what happens if you actually make the sale which is your best case first. You get paid a commission which is good but the product owner gets a customer with the email address and contact information. Who gets to follow up with that person? It's sure not you.

If not you should start today

In the worst case scenario - your potential sale leaves the affiliate site without purchasing - it is even worse. If the product owner is doing what they should be they made an attempt to gather your prospects contact information through a squeeze page of some type.

Again, the owner benefits from your traffic not you.

Now, if you had taken the time to set up a sales process and instead of advertising the affiliate site you advertised YOUR squeeze page it is much different. The person that bought was interested in that item so you probably could have gotten them to sign up to your special report on that topic.

You could still send them there AFTER you had gathered the follow up information. You still get the sale but you now have the contact too.

The person that left without buying may have had enough interest to sign up for your special report. It is entirely possible and even probable that after reading your report and creating the desire for the product that person will go back and buy the product.

If they don't there just may be something else you recommend (note you are no longer a peddler after your special report but a trusted source) that they will need and buy.

Please take the time to set up your full sales process so you benefit. If not as a product owner I thank you for building my list.

Tell - Don't sell

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is to keep trying to sell things first.

Turn your attitude around and spend your effort getting people into your circle of influence. Start to build the relationship and make a friend first.

Then when you tell them about things that help you they will listen. No longer are your selling things. You are telling them about things.

See people love to buy things they just don't like being sold. Remember what Jeffrey Gitomer says "All things being equal people what to do business with friends. All things NOT being equal people STILL want to do business with friends."

Become the friend first and then your telling will generate you much more than your selling ever will.

What is the downside of downline builders? 

Hint: The owner's agenda

Downline builders can be a great way to build free traffic generation downlines. Most free resources give you extra credits or page views for the activity of your downlines.

The problem has been that most downline builders are also created to build the owner's downline in some MLM program. Now if that happens to be a program you promote this becomes an excellent match for both the owner and the user.

The problem is that if you are only concerned about building a downline for program A and the owner is pushing program B everyone you bring in to get into your circle of influence is also exposed to program B.

You then have two choices. Join program B to take advantage of your prospects joining there or create yur own so you are not losing your prospects to the owners program.

Unless you are a very strong recruiter the owner has a huge advantage and increased credibiblity because he started the program and you didn't.

A solution to this problem has arrived.

    When I started, the great questions was to build me list, the solution was to participate with good products on giveaways.
    The second questions was to learn the mechanism to add back ends, front ends, and OTOs to the mechanism of selling. I realized that just a sequence of : squeese page, landing page, and thank you page with downloads it is not enough, this change of mind set was the key turning point.

    This is a beautiful lens. There is so much info to be read. I enjoy this lens from a well-known Traffic vote cast.
    You can even learn and share useful info,tips and resources with well known Traffic Exchanges in Affiliate Funnel 's forum.
