If you have read my lens You Can Work At Home, you learned about the years I spent searching for a work at home job or business that would allow me to stay home with my kids. During that search, I must have seen the term "Affiliate Marketing," a million times (ok, I'm exagerating a bit).

As a newbie to the world of Internet businesses, I was intimidated by most of what I read, so I never pursued this hot topic. Just recently, I have started to research affiliate marketing and want to share with you what I have learned so far...

It's Everywhere But What Is It?

Imagine you own a business and have hundreds of sales representatives pounding the pavement everyday to sell your products. Your sales reps work on commission so you don't have to pay them an hourly wage or salary. When a sales is made, you give a percentage of the money you earn. Basically, that is affiliate marketing.

Affiliate Marketing is a high tech sales force. You can choose to be a part of the sales force or the owner of the company. In this lens, I will focus on being a high tech sales rep.

Unlike most sales positions, affiliate marketing doesn't require you to get face to face with a prospect or call anyone. You simply advertise and spread the word about a product or service. When someone buys it, you get paid. You don't have to sell a thing; just get the customers to go to the company's website and they take it from there.

I've Chosen an Affiliate Program

What Next?

So you have spent some time reviewing the different affiliate marketing opportunities and have chosen a product that not only interests you, but you would actually buy it yourself if you were to see it online. What do you do next?

There are several ways to promote your program:

-Squidoo- Make a lens about the product you want to promote. Don't try to sell it! Create a review. What can the product do for you? What problem can it solve?

-PPC/Pay Per Click- Google AdWords and Yahoo are both popular. Bid on keywords to determine your advertisement's placement and drive traffic to the website.

-Articles- Write articles using key words about your product. Include hyperlinks in the article or in your bio line to direct customers to the company's website. EzineArticles.com and ArticleGeek.com are good places to start.

-Classified Ads- Use free classifieds such as USFreeAds.com and ClassifiedsForFree.com. Both are good resources.

-Blog- Create a blog and publish information about the product your promoting. Again, this should be a review, not a sales pitch. Blogger.com and My Yahoo Blog are good places to start.

-Offline Media- Distribute flyers, place newspaper ads, use magnetic signs on your car, and word of mouth are all strong traffic builders.

Whatever method you choose, your goal is to drive traffic to the company's website. You will achieve this goal if you create interest and show that the product fulfills a need.
