Building online stores with affiliate mashup scripts

Affiliate marketing is a great way to monetise your website or blog. However, keeping track of relevant offers or updating your store pages can be a pain. Affiliate mashup sites solve that problem by using data feeds from affiliate programs to present a range of related products.
With a good affiliate mashup script, you can add related content to boost the authority of your site, making it more relevant and useful to your visitors.
This lens looks at affiliate mashup scripts and explains how they can work for you.

What is an affiliate mashup store?

The idea of a Web 2.0 - a new version of the world wide web we all know and love - has been noised around for a few years now. Another name for it is the 'semantic web', but both these terms mean essentially the same thing: a new version of the web where users create, judge, and comment on the content.

The new breed of social Web 2.0 sites are familiar enough - Facebook, Myspace, Digg, YouTube - but the idea of bringing together similar ideas and content goes much further than this. A big component of this ideal is that of the 'mashup', and it's in this article that we'll be exploring not only what a mashup is, but how you can use it to boost traffic to your site, as well as increasing your site's earning potential.

Simply put, a mashup is the combination - the mashing up - of multiple sources of content. Wikipedia defines a mashup as "A web application that combines data from more than one source into an integrated experience." With the advent of tools like Google Maps, it's relatively easy, even for novice programmers, to pull together sources of information to create useful, content rich websites. With so much content out there, publishing in so many forms, you can quickly add depth and value to your existing site.

Many sites, like Amazon, Ebay, and Commission Junction, offer data feeds for affiliates. By using a mashup tool you can combine these to present a range of products and information to your users. On top of that, you get a commission every time someone buys something through your site.

A good mashup site can not only pull together a wide range of products from mutliple suppliers, but also combine video, news articles, and blog postings to give more information about the product range being sold. For example, if you had a site selling lingerie, it would make sense to present a range of clothes from different suppliers. Add in some video, and the latest news articles about what designs and trends are hot, and you have a content rich, useful website.

To see what I'm talking about, have a look at Midnight Playtime, a lingerie mashup site from the UK. You can see they've combined video, news, a wide range of products, and postings from related blogs to present a really authoritative source of information to the user.

You don't have to be a progammer to take advantage of these data feeds. Scripts and toolsets are available to quickly build rich and powerful mashup stores. If you know how to setup a Wordpress blog, you've got enough knowledge to build your own affiliate mashup store.

As long as these mashups have been around (and yes, I even purchased a Web 2.0 Mashups book from Barnes & Noble last year...) I have yet to really delve into them. However, you provide some good examples and descriptions of affiliate mashup stores that are easy to understand. I just may have to spend more time here and checking out any other lenses you may have. Thanks!

I wonder what you think - when does a mashup store become a comparison store? We recently rolled out the StoreMinator which mashes up eBay and Amazon results, quite effectively we think. But probably it will take more features and more stores to become a fully-fledged comparison shopping site.

Mashups rule though - I think they will continue to be very successful until everything has been mashed that CAN be mashed and the web becomes one BIG mashup!
