You Can Afford a Maid

Ranked #2,861 in Home & Garden, #35,136 overall

A Maid Is Cheaper Than Marriage Counseling

People say they can't afford a maid or housekeeper. I say, "think again." A clean home is essential to a comfortable life.

You can work day and night trying to juggle a job, family obligations, and keeping the house clean. Most likely you feel over-burdened and get cranky with the family. Your quality of life and your relationships suffer.

I'll provide some statistics, justifications, and ideas to help you understand why you need and deserve household help. Having a maid does not mean you've failed as SUPERWOMAN. It means you value your family time over time spent scrubbing floors and dusting.

Investigate the Cost for Cleaning in Your Area

Get a realistic idea of what such a service would cost. Ask around to see who cleans for your friends or co-workers. Ask them how much their maid charges. Call a cleaning service and ask them for an estimate. They usually have to come see the house and make a walk through to estimate the time needed for your situation.

Examine Your Current Spending

What would you give up to pay for a maid?

Now look at discretionary income. What do you buy that you don't absolutely need? Could you buy fewer things (that just end up as dust collectors in your house)? Are you spending money on fast food? Maybe you would have more time and energy to fix home cooked meals if you weren't vacuuming and scrubbing.

Look for these kinds of trade offs in the budget. Can you find enough places to cut back so the money can be spent on a maid?

How about Bartering or Swapping Services?

Maybe the money situation looks too tight and you know you can't squeeze out any funds for cleaning. Think about a swap of services. Do you have a friend who's spotless house you admire? Does she hate to shop or drive the kids around? Offer to take on some jobs for her if she will clean your house. Maybe she needs a babysitter and that is something you could do.

I'd give up ______________ to have one.

DarleneN says:

I've been thinking about getting household help for a while now. I hate vacuuming and cleaning the bathroom and mopping floors, so it doesn't get done until it's gross, which is part of the problem, I guess! I could pay for it with what I earn online.

Stinkerbelle says:

Fast food

Frischy says:

I had domestic help when I was married with young children. It was the best time of my life! I was free to focus on my children and husband, and during that time I also built up a business of my own. It was so nice! But, now it is like it happened to someone else. I don't know where the money would come from now. Not much left to cut back!

vallain says:

I'd give up eating out. When the house and kitchen is clean, I don't mind cooking.

Not much, I've got the housekeeping under control.

themeanviolets says:

I'm too OCD about how I like things done I would drive a maid out of the house. I know... control issues! But I grew up with that so it's been a challenge to break. I think I would hire a maid but then because I have to have everything spic & span before people come over I don't see that changing even with a maid coming. Too afraid people might find out how dirty I am I guess... and the funny thing is... I'm not! I just chase my tail because the more compulsive a person is the more they are disappointed. Well that's me. I need a support group haha. Or perhaps I should be a maid myself!

beckyf says:

I wouldn't want a maid.

I seriously do need a maid....even every other week or so.....although that wouldn't help me with the massive stuff that is piled here around my desk and in my craft room!
  • DarleneN Apr 17, 2012 @ 8:47 am | delete
I think it's a great idea! I don't mind laundry and yard work, but I hate cleaning house!

I very much needed to read this lens today. Thanks!

I enjoy taking care of my own house. This was an interesting lens. :)

I keep saying that if I ever win the lottery the first thing on my list is a maid to keep the dust at bay. (Mind you with my pack rat hubby even a maid would have a battle with that one). Your articles just seem to be everywhere in the section which I am fluttering through today.
  • Frischy Jul 17, 2011 @ 1:16 pm | delete
Hmm...I guess my previous comment should have been here instead. I would love to have some household help, and yard help too. Maybe if Squidoo takes off!

I used to have a maid and that was really nice, hoping to have one again someday!

I'm retired now so don't need a maid, but had one occasionally back in my working days.
I always enjoyed house cleaning. Loved the lens.
  • vallain Mar 21, 2011 @ 6:21 pm | delete
Ah, Lolly, I'm retired too and I'm still not keen on scrubbing floors and toilets.
  • pmolinero Sep 13, 2010 @ 3:30 pm | delete
A great lens. There are a lot of reasons for having a maid. For a few bucks you get so much more free time to spend with the family. We wouldn't want to miss our maid anymore.
  • rms Jul 17, 2010 @ 6:46 am | delete
    Love this!
  • jptanabe Jul 16, 2010 @ 3:57 pm | delete
I agree household help can be great. But we have a little house, no extra cash, and nothing to give up that would pay for a maid. In another lifetime perhaps!
  • Mary Beth Jul 16, 2010 @ 2:48 pm | delete
Before my retirement, I had household help for over 20 years. It was wonderful. I use to travel a lot for my job and if I had to worry about cleaning house too it would just be too much. It used to be such a treat when I'd come home from a long day at work and find a clean, fresh house. It did wonders for my sanity :)
