You don't have to spend a fortune to pull together a romantic gift that's priceless.

It's true -- some of the best things in life really are free! Or, at least, the price of a cup of coffee or two. Even if unsettled economic times have you on a budget, you can treat your sweetie to a Valentine's Day gift worthy of a king or queen. We'll take you through the steps on creating a memorable Valentine's Day, from love notes to a quick and creative gift card you can make yourself (the "Quickie"). Finally, we end with a couple tips for bedtime (even if it is in the middle of the day!)

Morning Love Notes From Her

Start the morning off with a romantic note, and say "I love you" in a unique way!
  • Write "I love you" in sidewalk chalk on the driveway or your front steps. Sprinkle rose or other flower petals across the words. (Tip: Many florists sell just the petals, or flower "seconds", for a lower price than whole flowers.)
  • This takes a little pre-planning and a call to his work. Get up early and call him in "sick" from work (do this quietly!). While he's taking his morning shower, write "meet me in the bedroom" or another note in the fog on the bathroom mirror. (Or you can write it in lipstick beforehand.) When he finds you, tell him today is just for the two of you. Or, reserve a day on the weekend for this.
  • Leave a Valentine's Day message on his computer desktop. This is easy to do: just download a picture or select it from the computer, right-click the mouse and then click on "set as desktop background". If you have photo editing software, add some romantic text to the picture before setting it as wallpaper on his desktop.
  • Write him a letter telling him how much he means to you. Then put it on his car dashboard, his computer keyboard, his pillow or even his sock drawer - any place he's sure to come across it first thing on Valentine's Day.

Make a "Quicky" Valentine's Day Card

Your sweetheart will melt over this handmade card.

Is it the morning of February 14th, and you just realized it? Luckily, you found this lens on February 13th, so quickly go to a craft or dollar store on the way home and pick up the following. (If it really is the 14th, skip to the next section to get started anyway!)
  • a computer and printer (or, if you have more time, create the greeting by hand instead!)
  • glue, scissors, scraps of material, lace, stickers, etc.
  • faux gems, pearls and other imitation precious metals or stones
  • heavy computer paper or construction paper - red and white (of course) but also yellows, blues, greens and purples
  • ink, magic markers, gel ink, glitter ink, etc
  • a picture of the two of you, if desired

Cutting a heart into the card. Simply fold the paper in half and trace a half heart curve. Taking a knife or sharp point, pierce the paper about a quarter inch in. Using scissors, cut around to about a quarter inch from the edge of the paper.

Open the paper, and you'll have your heart!

  1. Not yet Valentine's Day?
Go buy the materials above. For me, it cost a grand total of about $8.00, and that includes a pack of 50 colored paper. (Does not include siccors and glue, but you'll likely have this somewhere in the house. Use crazy glue if you don't have a glue stick, but don't use it on Styrofoam!)
This can be done next year too! Note, place everything in a junk drawer, because ...

    Morning of February 14th?
No problem. Take bits from old costume jewelry you have around the house. If you followed the instructions from last year, you'll also have all these scraps from last year. Now is the time to go through your junk drawer!
  2. Using your favorite computer search engine, look up "gift card template". (We have a few links below, and if you know some, add to the list!) Find a template that fits the size paper you will be using in your computer paper (usually, this will be 8.5" X 11").

NOTE: You can also write the card greeting out by hand or even create your text in calligraphy using pen and ink. Scroll down for some quotes to use.
  3. Print the card on heavy stock paper and fold it in half. Try one of these ideas for fabulous Valentine's Day greetings on the front and inside of your card:

FRONT: There are so many precious things on this earth.
INSIDE: And none compares to you.

FRONT: You are my shining star.
INSIDE: With all my love on Valentine's Day.

FRONT: I used to hope some day I'd find a diamond in the rough.
INSIDE: But I found the perfect gem in you.

    FRONT: Priceless....
    INSIDE: ...that's what you are.
  4. Decorate the card with the gems, sprinkles, paper clips, scraps of anything!
  5. If you'd like, personalize the inside of the card with a special picture of the two of you. You have a picture of you too, right?
  6. DONE! Serve with toast, coffee, a plastic rose if you can find one, and a big, goofy smile!

Adding some bling ...

My finished card!

Love Quotes

Add a passionate quote to your love note or greeting card.

A well-placed love quote can add spice to a love note, a greeting card...or even as a whisper during a moment of passion. Here a few of our favorite sayings about love and romance:

"Love conquers all things; let us surrender to love." - Virgil

"Love is a friendship set to music." - E. Joseph Cossman

"Real love stories never have endings." - Richard Bach

"I love you, not for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you." - Roy Croft

"I love you--those three words have my life in them." - Alexandrea to Nicholas III

"Who, being loved, is poor?" - Oscar Wilde

"Remember tonight, for it is the beginning of always." - Dante Alighieri

"A simple 'I love you' means more than money." - Frank Sinatra

"My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep." -William Shakespeare

"Grow old with me! The best is yet to be." - Robert Browning

"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying 'Goodbye' so hard." - Annie (the movie)

"If music be the food of love; play on." - William Shakespeare

"You were made perfectly to be loved and surely I have loved you, in the idea of you, my whole life long." - Elizabeth Barrett Browning

A Valentine's Day with Atmosphere

Set the right mood (in any room!) with these fun and sexy tips.

You can easily and inexpensively make any room in your home or apartment "ready for love." The hints below will help get you started.
  • Remove the clutter: Toss paperwork, folders and other everyday items into a box and stash them away for the duration of your "interlude." Items that can't easily be moved--like a hooked-up computer--can be camouflaged by draping them with material if you wish.
  • Dim the lights: If your lights have a dimmer, set them lower than you normally would. Or turn them off completely and use candles to set the mood. (Always place candles in fire safe containers and keep them well away from anything flammable.)
  • Exchange bright light bulbs for dim and/or colored ones: Fabric draped over a lamp could be a fire hazard, but you can create a soft and sexy effect by using low-wattage bulbs.
  • Show off the bed: Make your bed the "showpiece" of the room. Decorate it with soft, sensuous throw pillows; place fire safe candles on either side to draw attention to this all-important piece of furniture. Use your slinkiest sheets and choose sexy colors, like red, black or animal patterns.
  • If you've chosen a room other than the bedroom, highlight one piece of furniture as the "main event," such as a couch or big, comfortable armchair that's perfect for two.
  • Use good scents: No doubt about it--scent is an aphrodisiac. Choose something musky or floral and spray the area VERY lightly (don't overdo it!) to create a calling card your love won't be able to resist.
  • Remember the power of flowers: A handful of flowers placed on or near the bed can deliver enormous passion potential. Chose one or two roses, or a handful of rose petals (available at your local florist, usually at a discount price).

Dressing Up

Why role playing is so exciting--and how to incorporate it into your special times together.

In the mood for a little playtime? Try on a (temporary) new role. You and your mate can be anyone you want to be, from Antony and Cleopatra to the bad schoolboy and stern task mistress.

Experts say role playing can add spice to the bedroom because it takes you out of the "everyday" and into a play world where anything goes. Try these ideas on for size:

* The Plumber and The Client: Oops! It's the plumber...and he's ogling you with more than professional interest.

* Antony Meets Cleopatra: Young Queen Cleopatra gets to know rough-and-ready Marc Antony a bit more intimately.

* Bad Cop: She's taking you in! But first she's going to have a few minutes alone with you to teach you a bit of respect.

* After Hours Business Meeting: The boss is more demanding than ever. This time she's requested a special meeting where you'll have to show ALL your talents in order to get that big promotion.

* Viking Plunder: Male and female warrior meet and engage in a battle of wills--and a little playful wrestling--before succumbing to their mutual desire.

* I'll Try Harder: You've been a bad girl...but this teacher is more than ready to dish out a few after school-hour lessons.

What Women Want

Break away from the ordinary with these priceless ideas that won't leave you in the red.

Many men approach romantic occasions with a degree of trepidation. You know you're expected to blow her away...yet television advertising, your friends and your family only leave you more confused on ideas than ever.

What DO women want? And how can you give yours her due...without winding up in hock? Instead of a box of chocolates or Hallmark card, try something creative, fresh and new. She'll be thrilled that you took the time to devise a romantic evening or weekend...and we bet you'll wind up happy, too!

Afternoon Delight
The most romantic dates don't have to happen in the evening. Try an afternoon picnic at a grassy, shaded spot. Canoeing is another dreamy way to while away the hours; find a location that rents boats and surprise her with a romantic ride. (Many canoe rental locations charge $15, $10 or even less for an hour or two of fun on the water.)

Theater...the Real One
Movies are fine, but a live theater performance is elegant and will have her giving you a standing ovation. Look in the Yellow Pages, on the internet or call colleges in your area for performances and times. Tickets to small-production plays and musicals are often very inexpensive, and the atmosphere of a live show will almost certainly generate more of a response from your love than a movie would.

Be in Pictures
If you dated in an area you can get to easily now, take along a camera and tape yourself in front of various locales. Stand in front of the restaurant you and she visited and "talk to the camera" about how you had butterflies when you asked for that first kiss at the front table. Show her the library where you went to look up love quotes for your wedding proposal. She'll keep the recording for years...or maybe forever.

Love Notes
Burn a handful of love songs onto a CD and slip it into her car so it will play when she turns the ignition. Include songs that describe your feelings for her, favorite tunes you share and songs that you recall from important times the two of you shared.

Remember: creating memories is priceless. Keep the romantic moments in high gear and you'll have a love to last a lifetime.
