Mickey Mouse has spanned two centuries and still is going strong. Born in 1928 and was immediately thrown into show business. His third cartoon short (Steamboat Willie) was the pivotal cartoon that made him a star. It was the first animated short to have synchornized music and sound. Unlike other cartoons of the day, Mickey continued to be featured in the new fad of talkies and became the most famous cartoon of the time. His previous two shorts (Plane Crazy & Gallopin Gaucho) was re-released with sound which added to Mickey's fame.

Mortimore Mouse ?
Two stories suggest how Mickey got his name. Originally the newly created mouse was named Mortimore. Actor Mickey Rooney claims after Walt Disney met him at the Warner Bros studios, Walt was inspired to name his newly created cartoon character after him. Rooney was filming his Mickey McGuire comedy series at the time. The most popular and accepted story is that Walt's wife did not like Mortimore and suggested Mickey. Walt Disney & Ub Iwerks
Friends since they were 18 years old, Ub Iwerks was a shy talented artist while Disney was the outgoing visionary idea man - that combination created our favorite mouse. Both started their careers at a company named Pesman-Rubin Commercial Art Studio in Missouri. In 1920, they formed a company that was short-lived. Walt then started working for Kansas City Film Ad Company and Ub Iwerks followed. Disney formed another company, Iwerks followed and Iwerks left when it was not successful. - I didn't know Mickey Mouse had his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame...nice anniversary gift! Walt Disney sure would have gotten a kick out of that. A sweet tribute to everyone's favorite mouse.
