Mortimore Mouse ?

Two stories suggest how Mickey got his name. Originally the newly created mouse was named Mortimore. Actor Mickey Rooney claims after Walt Disney met him at the Warner Bros studios, Walt was inspired to name his newly created cartoon character after him. Rooney was filming his Mickey McGuire comedy series at the time. The most popular and accepted story is that Walt's wife did not like Mortimore and suggested Mickey. The name Mortimore was later as one of Mickey's enemies.

Walt Disney & Ub Iwerks

Friends since they were 18 years old, Ub Iwerks was a shy talented artist while Disney was the outgoing visionary idea man - that combination created our favorite mouse. Both started their careers at a company named Pesman-Rubin Commercial Art Studio in Missouri. In 1920, they formed a company that was short-lived. Walt then started working for Kansas City Film Ad Company and Ub Iwerks followed. Disney formed another company, Iwerks followed and Iwerks left when it was not successful. In 1923, Disney decided his future was in California and once settled, Walt called for his friend to join him out west.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit

All Walt wanted was a larger budget for his popular and successful cartoon, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Universal Studios balked at the idea offered Disney a salary position and hired away most of his employees except Iwerks. Disney refused, finished out his contract with Universal Studio and then started again with his loyal friend, Ub Irwerks. Folklore states that Mickey was based on a pet mouse that Disney had as a child in the midwest, other stories state Mickey was based on the mice that was running around the old buildings where Walt & Ub worked while most articles state Mickey is Oswald is mouse version with shorter ears and thicker middle.
