Backlinks are one of the key ingredients to improving your search engine ranking. Every article you submit can have at the very least 2 keyword anchor text links in it.

That means you get 2 quality links when you submit to a directory. You also get 2 quality links when someone publishes your article.

You get 2 links ~ of a little lesser quality, but they still count ~ when you mass submit whether you do it by hand or use an automated submitter or a submitter service.
