American Family Life Insurance Company was founded on November 17, 1955 by three brothers, John, Paul and Bill Amos. They started the company in six small rented rooms in Columbus, Georgia. In its first year of operations, Aflac had 6,426 policyholders and $388,000 in assets.

Who would have thought 50 years ago, that the small, one-room operation in downtown Columbus, Georgia, would one day be a thriving Fortune 500 international insurance company listed on the New York Stock Exchange? Today, Aflac has over 59 billion dollars in assets and insures more than 40 million people worldwide.

In 2007, Aflac was named to Fortune magazine's list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in America for the ninth consecutive year.

Linda Kaplan-Thaler's advertising agency came up with the campaign of the Aflac Duck. During a meeting for their client Aflac, one executive held their colleague's nose and said, "Now, say AFLAC." He did, and he sounded like a duck. Everyone laughed. The rest, as the cliche holds, is history.

When AFLAC originally came to Kaplan-Thaler, it was a company little-known to the general public. The firm's chair and CEO told Thaler, "I don't care what you do, as long as you get people to know the name of this company."

Now Aflac is a household name due to the duck - particularly the ads featuring the duck and legendary baseball player Yogi Berra and comedian Gilbert Gottfried. And Aflac Ringtones are some of the most popular downloads for cell phones.
