African Dwarf Frogs - We don't eat fish food!

Welcome to the wonderful world of African Dwarf frogs!  African Dwarf frogs are completely aquatic, and they can live in a heated fish tank!

Although African Dwarf frogs appreciate some frozen and thawed, or live bloodworms every now and then, you don't have to worry about feeding them live foods all the time!

If your squeamish like me this is a very good thing!  African Dwarf frogs can make your dreams of having a frog come true, with out making the nightmare of crickets running rampant all over the house come true at the same time.

Unfortunately, even though African Dwarf frogs are aquatic, they don't eat fish food!

The frogs in the bag are starving!

I rescued them from a pet store that was only feeding them fish food, and they weren't getting enough to eat.

Unfortunately, one of the frogs, Tabitha, died two days after I brought her home.  The rest of them are doing fine, and are healthy, happy, and no where near as skinnny.

I feed my frogs HBH frog and tadpole bites. Although I'm not sure that the brand of food makes a difference, it is important to feed your frogs frog and tadpole bites, and not fish food.

African Dwarf frogs have poor eyesight, so they have to hunt for the food - it is important to make sure that they are getting enough food, and that if there are other fish, or frogs, in the tank, they aren't getting the food before the African Dwarf frogs are getting their food.

After all, no one wants their pets to starve!

Chytridiomycosis in African Dwarf Frogs

If your frog has been feeling sick, hasn't been eating, is trying to climb out of the water, or has rough flaking skin, please read this article. Diagnosis of Chytridiomycosis in Commercially Purchased African Dwarf Frogs

Due to the presence of this disease all new African Dwarf frogs should be quarantined for at least two months before introducing them to an aquarium with African Dwarf Frogs.

Yes

Mikele says:

I have one African dwarf frog and one albino dwarf. I keep them in separate tanks. The African dwarf is in a 2.5 gallon tank while the other is in a 5 gallon set up with many other fish. My albino eats guppies, so I won't put him with smaller frogs for fear that he'd eat them. I love my frogs! I've had them both for almost a year now.

Sarah says:

Katerna ADF's do shed, so if it looks like skin, that's probably what you're seeing.

That's funny Lizzy.

Your birds could open the lid on the fish tank?

What an interesting critter. I don't want one though. My birds would turn it into lunch.

Cassie your betta and frogs should be ok, as long as you can keep them cool enough. If you can get a cooler or a styrofoam container that's big enough to keep they're plastic container in that should help keep the temperature even.

You might want to separate the betta and the frogs while they are traveling so they don't decide to pick on each other if you are keeping them in a smaller than ususal container.

Both the beta and the frogs should be fine without the aerator for the duration of the trip, but you might want to keep one with you if it won't be any trouble.

I hope you and your African Dwarf frog and beta have a safe trip, and that you enojoy your visit to Florida.

Cassie

I need to drive down to Florida. It is a 3-day drive, appx. 8 hrs a day. Once there, however, I'll be staying for 5-6 weeks, so I really need to take my little guys with me if possible. I have one African dwarf and a male betta. I plan on taking them in a large plastic container, air holes in the lid, a battery-powered fan for at least when I take pit-stops (or always if thought better.) Each night I'll take them into the hotel w/ me of course. Should I keep an aerator to run during the evenings? Do you have any other ideas/suggestions? I use bottled gallon jugs of spring water from grocery stores with betta conditioning added... so I doubt I need to bring my own water with, unless just a slight bit for water changes. Please let me know! Thanks!

They are so cute, and can be so funny.

Whether they are hanging out in the java moss, hitching a ride on Captain Jack, the betta, or racing to the top of the tank, there's always something going on.
