Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa celebrations aren't the same as ChristmasCelebrations. They are both unique and separate occasions and celebrate different things.

KwanzaaCelebration:

Kwanzaa is celebrated the week following ChristmasDay from December 26 through January 1st. "Matunda Ya Kwanza" means "First Fruits" in Swahili and this weeklong festival celebrates and commemorates the first harvest celebrations in Africa. The festival has now broadened to include honoring of black heritage and culture, history, family and community.

Ebony AngelThis now worldwide celebration was originated in 1966 by Maulana Ron Karenga to foster African-Americans awareness of their common heritage despite their many countries of origin and family histories. Dr. Maulana "Ron" Karenga is chair of the black studies department at California State University at Long Beach and a well known author.

The KwanzaaCelebration promotes Nguzo Saba-seven fundamental principles: Umoja-Unity, Kujichagulia-Self-determination, Ujima-Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamaa-Cooperative Economics, Nia-Purpose, Kuumba-Creativity, and Imani-Faith.

During KwanzaaWeek, SpecialCandles are lit to reflect these principles. The seven candles (three red, one black, and three green) are placed in a special candelabrum, called a Kinara. There is a specific sequence to lighting the Kinara, see the proper KinaraCandle Lighting sequence with graphics here.

This festivalweek culminates in a family feast and the exchanging of symbolic gifts.
