Rosa Parks A Great African American

Rosa Parks a civil-rights activist, who on December 1st of 1955, had the courage to humbly refuse giving up her seat on a crowed public bus to a white person in Montgomery, Alabama. Rosa was then arrested and tried in a court of law. This was the trigger to Martin Luther King, Jr., who organized the boycott. On December 21st, desecration began on the bus system.

History of the Civil Rights Movement Coloring Book

King's Birthday: January 15th ~ US Federal Holiday

King, the Civil-rights leader, the son of a Atlanta Baptist minister (Martin Luther King), a promising student who was influenced by authors such as Gandhi and Thoreau. He was an ordained minister that became active in the civil-fights movement during the Montgomery bus boycott, and was able to help end the segregation policy of the city on public transportation. King's campaign against segregation was nonviolent, while he became a force behind the movement Civil Rights Act in 1964. The 1964 March on Washington was highlighted by King's famous "I Have A Dream" speech, and attracted 250,000 people. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in the next year. He was assassinated on April 4th of 1968, while leading the Poor People's March on Washington. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the great American's and his birthday is a federal holiday.

My Mom loved Martin Luther King, Jr. and what he stood for, and what he believed. She always said that someday her birthday would be a National Holiday. When Martin died, his birthday became Martin Luther King Day in the USA, a national holiday (and so did Mom's). Somehow, she knew that her birthday would be a national holiday, well kind of!

Abraham Lincoln - January 1st, 1863

President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves in the southern states that had refused to join the Union. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the Constitution grated full and equal rights to all citizens.

However, those principles had to be enforced.

The Civil Tights Movement

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded in 1909. It began to with effort to teach people that "separation but not equal" is unjust and especially so when it comes to education. The civil rights movement gained momentum when the NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall won the case Brown vs the Board of Education on May 17th, 1955. The Supreme Court ruled that separate education facilities are basically unequal.

Peace March
In support of voting rights, civil rights activists began a march from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery on March 7th, 1965. During this peaceful march, police used tear gas, clubs, and whips to stop this event that became know as Bloody Sunday. The Voting Rights Act was then passed in response to the march.

Sit In
February 1960, four black students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College were refused service in Greensboro, North Carolina, at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter. They staged a sit-in (a protest) and refused to move. Student sit-ins were effective way of integrating parks, theaters, swimming pools, libraries and other public places in the South.

Quotes ~ The Greatest

My all time hero, Muhammad Ali

He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.

Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from some-thing they have deep inside them -- a desire, a dream, a vision... [T]hey have to have the skill, and they will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.

I hated the sight on TV of big, clumsy, lumbering heavyweights plodding, stalking each other like two Frankenstein monsters, clinging, slugging toe to toe. I knew I could do better. I would be fast as a lightweight, circle, dance, shuffle, hit, and move...dance again and make as art out of it.

The man who views the world at fifty the same way he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.

Hating people because of their color is wrong. And it doesn't matter which color is hating.

I hated every minute of training, but I said, "Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life like a champion."

It isn't the mountains ahead that wear you out; its the pebble in your shoe.

Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power to win when the match is even.

Service to others is the rent you pay for your room down here.

Cassius Clay is a slave name, I didn't choose it and I don't want it. I am Muhammad Ali, a free man -- it means "Beloved of God" -- and I insist that people use it in speaking of and to me.

I am American. I am the part you won't recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, not yours; get used to me.
