African Flower Hexigon
The first yarn color is the center of the flower. The second yarn color is the flower petals. The third yarn color is thin outline of the flower petals.
-
1Chain 6.
(If you've never crocheted a chain stitch before, visit "How to Crochet a Chain Stitch.") -
2Slip stitch into the first chain.

(Slip stitching into the first chain of the 6 you just made forms a ring.) -
3Chain 4.
(This serves as the first double crochet stitch of the next round.) -
4Double crochet, then chain 1. Repeat this 5 times.
(You are double crocheting around the entire ring, not in any particular chain stitch.) -
5
Slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the chain stitch made in step 3 above.
(This completes the second round. The final slip stitch forms a ring. When you are done you will have 6 double crochet stitches including the chain that began the round.) -
6Change the color of the yarn. Chain 3.
(To start the next round.) -
7Double crochet 3 times in the space closest to your crochet hook.
(Counting the chain stitch you have 4 double crochets in that space.) -
8
Chain 1 to get to the next space in the previous round. Double crochet in that space 4 times.
Repeat this step 5 times. When finished with the round, you have 4 double crochets in each space of the previous round. These clusters of 4 double crochets are "petals" of the flower. -
9Chain 3. Double crochet 6 times in the space closest to your hook.
(The chain stitch serves as the first double crochet in the next round.) -
10Chain 1. Double crochet 7 times in the next space. **Repeat this step 5 times.
(In this round, you will crochet 7 times in each space of the previous round. When finished there will be there will be 6 "sets" of double crochets, or petals, in the round.) -
11Chain 1. Slip stitch to the 3rd chain stitch of the chain that began the round.
(This completes your last round of petals.) -
12
Change the yarn color. Chain 2. Single crochet 6 times in the stitches of the previous round.
(This makes a border around each petal of the flower.) -
13When you reach the first open space of the previous round, insert your crochet hook deeply through the open space and int the round before it, as shown in the photo. Single crochet.
(This draws the petal downward.) - 14Single crochet 7 times in the top of the last round. Repeat step 13 above in the next open space. Continue until you reach the end of the round.
-
15
Slip stitch into the top of the chain stitch that started the round. -
16Change the yarn color. Chain 3.
(This begins the last round.) -
17
Double crochet 3 times in the top of the previous round. Chain 1. Without moving on, double crochet 1 times in the same stitch. Double crochet 3 times along the top of the previous row. - 18Chain 1 and skip the top of the single crochet stitch that you made deep in the previous round. Double crochet 4 times. Chain 1. Double crochet 4 times making the first of these in the same stitch as the last set of 4 double crochet stitches. ** Repeat this step 5 times.
- 19Chain 1 and slip stitch into the 3rd chain stitch that began the round.
