Maybe An African Grey Parrot Will Allow It To Own You!

Some people say dogs are man's best friend but they have never owned an African Grey Parrot. For generations African Grey Parrots have been companions to humans. And not just in Africa. They have excellent communication abilities, they're intelligent, and they might even be able to solve some of your problems with their reasoning skills. Although I don't think they'll mow your lawn but they will talk to while you do.

African Grey Parrots don't mind living in apartments, condos or houses and if they did, with their talking skills they would tell us. Most African Greys are shy but adaptable, temperamental but get over it quick and they will occasionally take a nip from your finger but you'll get over it pretty quick as their lovable nature will make you laugh again.

Beware of the information below: It may force you to get your own African Grey Parrot!

The Long Life Of An African Grey Parrot

With proper care you can pass on your lovable African Grey Parrot to your children

African Grey Parrot's have an average life span of 50 to 70 years if properly cared for. They live on fruit, nuts, seed and a good supply of vegetables. They tend to get pretty possessive of one person if they don't have contact with other people from time to time. African Grey Parrot obviously are from Africa, are medium sized and are famous for their intelligence.

They sport bright red tail feathers with subtle shades of grey scalloped feathers. There are two types available: the larger Congo Grey and the smaller Timneh Grey. Both birds have pretty much the same temperament. They can be quite vocal mostly in the morning and evenings. They both perfectly mimic human speech as well as tomes and inflections such as telephones, doorbells, barking dogs, and meowing cats, just to name a few things.

What William F. Mansey "LargoGuy" Has to Say About This Cage

Brand New Parrot Bird Wrought Iron Cage Play-Top 40x30x69-WI40AS

Amazon Price: $449.99 (as of 05/27/2012)Buy Now

This cage is an excellent value! I have been looking for parrot cages locally and found that smaller cages were going for the same price as this larger cage. (even when the shipping charge is added) The shipping fee is a bargain considering that the documentation, I received, indicated a shipment weight of 180 pounds! Even if I had found a similar cage, locally, I would not have been able to bring it home and would likely have to pay extra to have the cage delivered anyway. Assembly would still be required since the assembled cage is BIG.

Just what are they like...

They are native to Africa region and are generally medium size parrots. They are grey in color with white area surrounding mostly eyes and neck. African grey parrots are renowned for their red and maroon tails.

From these characteristics, African grey parrots are categorized in two sub species. African Congo grey parrots with light grey feathers, black beaks, deep red tails and 12 inches to 30cm long in size. Then other species is called as Timneh African grey parrots. They have a darker maroon tail, darker charcoal gray color, with a horn colored beak.

They are typically smaller than African Congo gray parrots. Then other two species are also there are that are considered as third and fourth sub species of African gray parrots. The Ghana African Grey parrot is somewhat similar to Congo gray parrots with relatively darker and smaller and the fourth one is Cameroon African Grey parrot or called as 'big silver'.

Think Before You Buy

Keeping African gray parrots as pets requires dedication and large commitment. These parrots are considered as most challengeable as they cannot be tamed easily. If handled carefully, they can be life long buddies with their owners and it is not surprising to see.

You can buy these outstanding parrots from local bird markets with prices that may vary depending on the species and size of the parrot.

This book has great information especially for the new bird owner. I would highly recommend reading it to anyone who is even just thinking of getting an African Grey! It gives a lot of insight into things a first time bird owner might not think about ahead of time.

This book is one of the best Grey books I have read. Ms. Moustaki does well in being simple, frank, yet detailed enough to guide the reader in how to care properly for an African Grey. Specifics would have been good in the housing your African Grey chapter, but she painted a broad enough stroke and gave enough guidelines to guide the owner in their decision. This is a basic book, and meant for new-owners. It fits its purpose well!
