African Lion Safari

One of the top three things on my list of things to do before I die, is an African safari. It's hard for me to imagine anything more adventurous or exotic. Spending time on the Serengeti, watching big cats hunting, and other big game in their natural environment would be amazing. It would be the ultimate escape from urban life. If you're thinking the same thing, there are a few considerations you may want to keep in mind.

First of all, think about what it is that really entices you to take such an adventurous vacation. What is it you want to do, and what is it you want to see? Is it the animals, the scenery, the people, or something else? I think part of it for me, would be to see the chance to see the world unspoiled by man. The thing that worries me about that though, is the longer it takes me to get there, the harder it will be to find.

It's time to do a bit of homework. Africa is a pretty big place, and you need to look at the different areas, and countries to decide what country can show you what you want to find. Some countries have more culture, some countries have more wildlife, and some countries are better for scenery. Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and South Africa are just a few of the big spots you'll want to look at.

As part of your homework, don't forget to consider seasonal advantages. As a rule, you want to avoid the rainy season's. Dry season has several advantages, particularly for the avid big-game watchers. During the dry season, there's a less foliage, and shorter grass in the grasslands. This makes it easier for you, and your guides to spot wildlife. Not to mention, you'll feel a whole lot more comfortable in a dryer climate. The dryer times, also make watering holes more of an animal magnet. Which means for the tourist, they are a great place to visit and see large numbers of animals.

Don't forget the logistical administrative items as well. Every country will have its own unique is that requirements, and you have to check with each one. Another important consideration, is vaccinations. Typhoid, diphtheria, hepatitis, and yellow fever are diseases you don't want to trifle with. Don't forget to top up your medical insurance as well before you leave. In cases like this, it's best to plan for the worst, and hope for the best.

Visiting Africa can be the vacation of a lifetime, if you plan for it and do a bit of homework. For me at least, preparing for the trip can be almost as much fun as actually going there. It's the anticipation of the adventure, that's really exciting, and a bit of an adventure in and of itself.
