The Prevention of Mother to Child HIV/AIDS transmission in Africa
Ranked #620 in Volunteering, #99,152 overall
African United Partnerships
By setting new training methods and treatment in hospitals when dealing with pregnant women we can reduce the rate of MTCT by as high as 35-50%.
Their children deserve a chance at life, free of HIV and AIDS. By donating to this cause, you are ensuring these children have a chance at life, and have a bright future ahead of them.
Just $33 saves a child's life. That is almost a dollar a day, or less than the cost of a cup of coffee per day. I hope this lens provides you with the information you need to know about this situation and cause, and help make a difference for the children of Africa.

How We Make A Difference
African United Partnerships will affect hospitals in Africa strategically located in 4 health districts (Buea, Tiko, Kumba and Tombel), of the Southwest province of Cameroon. By starting training programs and implementing new standards when dealing with pregnant patients, we can greatly increase preventing mother to child transmission (PMTCT). By determining if a pregnant woman has AIDS/HIV staff can begin treatment to reduce the risk of spreading it to their child. How AUP Prevents Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) of AIDS/HIV
And How Your Donation Will Change Lives
How AUP Prevents Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) of AIDS/HIVBy working with 12 facilities strategically located in Africa, we can train staff with practices that screen pregnant women for AIDS/HIV, and begin prevention of spreading it to their child.
Strong and consistent research findings indicate that, even without using antiretroviral medications, pre and postnatal services can reduce vertical transmission by as much as 20% if effective Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT), elective caesarean section, and appropriate child feeding advice are provided, while avoiding invasive obstetric procedures like episiotomy and early rupture of membranes. The effectiveness of pMTCT rises above 20% if drugs like niverapine or AZT are associated. Training staff to ensure/implement these 'simple' but effective MTCT preventive measures is a necessary first step to achieving a reduction in transmission.

Saving Children From AIDS/HIV MEME Project
A Blogging Project for Non-Profit To Save Lives
African United Partnerships and Africa As One have a new project and needs the help of fellow bloggers. Our goal is to save 200 children's lives in Africa by preventing the transmission of AIDS/HIV from mother to child. To do this, we need your help by blogging and spreading the word about this cause. The Project
AUP is working with 12 pre and post natal health services in Africa. These services handle an activity volume of about 3000 pre- and postnatal cases per year and this clientele is 95% composed of the poor and vulnerable. By training workers with measures to prevent mother to child transmission (pMTCT), we can reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS up to 35-50%. Just $33 can save a child's life. The target of this project is to save 200 lives by October 11th. To do so, we need to raise $6,000. We can do this with your help.
More information on the project can be found at http://africanunitedpartnerships.org/pmtct_project.html.
