Africat: Cheetah and Leopard Conservation in Namibia

Okonjima, luxury lodge and home to The AfriCat Foundation

Okonjima is a luxury lodge in Namibia, Southern Africa; one of the best I have ever stayed in, but it is also the home of The AfriCat Foundation, whose aim is the conservation of Namibia's large carnivores: especially Cheetahs, Leopards.

Okonjima is approximately halfway between Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia and probable entry-point into the country and Etosha National Park, a popular destination for safari vacations, so it makes a great place to visit en-route before or after a Safari. It is advisable to stay for a night or two to really enjoy this wonderful location.

Okonjima and Africat

Guest Farm/Bush Camp

Okonjima Guest Farm/Bush Camp, which is run by the Africat charity (www.africat.org) who help rescue leopards and cheetahs. The accommodation is in the form of traditional huts, like many other high-end safari lodges in southern Africa with luxurious beds and bathrooms inside, but here the half-mile walk through long grass to the lodge with a torch is even more traumatic. Leopards wander around the grounds freely, although rarely eating the guests. The usual format of game drives and communal dinners with sun downers while game viewing is used here, but with a different selection of wildlife. The hides for watching the leopards made viewing and photography from close-up exceptional. Radio collars on some of the leopards made it possible to locate these otherwise extremely shy animals.

I too, have to comment on the Cheetahs. The two in the foreground look very young. The Cheetah in the background is probably the ever-lovin' mumma. Love the photo!

YOU KNOW Andy that I am a seriously huge fan for cats and big cats of all kinds! I know I've told you before just how much I love all your photography! The picture with the 2 cheetahs in the foreground, with the one cheetah behind? I'd love to see a closeup of just the 2 ... love THAT pic!

What magnificent animals! I had already spotted and admired your cheetah photo on Zazzle, good to learn more about where it was taken.

This lens is awesome. I love it. I am going to tell my editors on my Thai News website to write something about this lens and probably feature it.

I will comment here again once we do.

    Great Work
