Nana's rules for Coupon Shopping
Couponing 101
Most people think they need to buy the cheap brands to save money but let me assure you that you can have the absolute best and lots of it, when you learn the ins and out of couponing!
- ...Clip every coupon...
You never know if you'll use something that is free or almost free by combining that coupon with a store coupon/store sale/clearance.
Also, consider the things you get at little or no cost, as bartering currency with friends & relatives.
Or you can always make trades for the coupons you need with the coupons someone else needs. - ...Stock up...
One rule of thumb while couponing... if you find a good deal, be ready to stock up for the next three months on that item.
Most sales run in a cycle that lasts about three months. So, grocery shopping is about to become a bit dirrent than you are used to.
After a couple months of buying this way, you'll never run out of anything and you'll be stocked up with only the best for much, much less! - ...Organize well...
An easy way to organize your coupons, is to get some large business envelopes. Organize your coupons into groups that you will be familiar with. You'll want to access them as fast as possible before going shopping or when you find that unexpected deal or clearance item.
There are mulitple ways to organize.
Use the envelope system in a plastic shoe box.
Another way to organize is to use a large 3 ring binder filled with baseball card inserts.
Make sure you set up categories for everything you'll buy. Some like to set them up by the store isles they are used to shopping in.
I cannot say enough about the importance of knowing what coupons you have and when they expire.
Very important to label your categories that you file your coupons in!
I find it much easier to organize while cutting. - ...Clipping, blinkies & others...
Get everyone you know to save those Sunday coupon inserts, magazine coupons and grocery store "blinkie" coupons for you. Don't forget to pick them up!
I usually offer free food or personal items to friends and family. That way they will be way more interested in keeping your stock of coupons up!
Get known at your local restaurants or coffee house so that you can come in at the end of the day and "dispose" of all the newspapers that people read and just leave.
The coupons those papers include are bound for the trash, unless you go rescue them! - ...Know your prices...
Get familiar with your store ads and prices so you'll know the best spots to go to. It might be a good idea to keep a price book of the things you purchase the most.
Don't spend a lot of fuel going clear across town to save only a few pennies. The key to saving with coupons, is planning ahead.
And stocking up on a whole lot of deals while you can get them! - ...Plan, plan, plan...
Don't spend a lot of fuel going clear across town to save only a few pennies. The key to saving with coupons, is planning ahead.
Read your ads early on Wednesday morning and Sunday mornings. Take part of a day to read, plan, match all your grocery lists to get the best deal.
No one wants to go shopping only to come home and find out that you could have gottne 10 of those items for the same price you bought one for at the wrong store. - ...The best deal may be at the most expensive store...
In couponing, it may NOT pay to shop at the least expensive store. If you can shop at a more expensive store and double your discount with a store coupon & a manufacturers coupon and get an automatic discount at the check out stand, and end up with a catalina for dollars off your next purchase, you'll do much better in the long run. - ...Triple dipper...
One of my most important tips to share with you is the art of doubling or tripling your savings.
I always look to use a current manufacturing coupon
with a store sale, and I use another store's coupon, with the same deal, if possible. (Even if the other store coupon says manufacturers, it isn't considered one when you use it at some stores.)
Another bonus that I love, is the triple dipper! Sometimes you can buy something on sale, use your coupons to get the best deal and then, because you bought that item, you use a coupon to get another item free!
So, say you buy Oreo Cookies that is one sale. You use another stores coupon that says buy one get one free and for the both you use mfr coupons. Then, to sweeten the deal, you use a coupon that says, but a bag of Oreo cookies and get one gallon of milk for free! So, if you have two of those coupons, you'll get all those cookies and a couple of gallons of milk free! - ...Shop early...
I like to shop really early morning or late at night so that the checkers and other customers aren't put out by my orders. It may take a long time going dealing with all the mulitiple deasl I bring to the check out stand.
You want to work with your local stores and their customers, so they will also want to work with you.
Remember, no one wants to work with someone who is too demanding or inconsiderate. - ...Gracious me!
Be gracious no matter what.
Since couponing and shopping the best deals is a fine art, we never want to convince the stores that it is too big a hassle to offer their deals to us.
Besides, if once it doesn't work, believe me, go back another time. Next time, you'll make up for any other times you had a rude or unkind checker.
Always understand this is a privelige we have in America, not a right!

I always try to match these coupons to a clearance sale. And so that my purchase only comes to a small amount above the coupon. The reason is that I want to pay out as little as possible. If I can use 10 coupons and my only output is $3.00 above the coupon amount, I may get a deal like a few months ago... Using 10/$10.00 off a $10.00 purchase, I was able to get clearance merchandise, (only because they were now out of season,) for under $30.00, but had I purchased them all at once using one coupon, I would have paid much, much more! As is... I paid $30.00 plus tax for over $370.00 worth of clothing and towels. Was it worth it? Oh, yeah.................
