Cream Tea Scone Jam And Cream Debate
Ranked #4,111 in Food & Cooking, #77,865 overall
Pick your side for the cream tea verbal shoot out. Which order should you put jam and cream on a scone? Here's what I think.
Howdy partners. Welcome to the wild west of food and cuisine. Now there's some trouble brewing in town over at the Cream Tea Corral on account of two gangs of Sconederados wanting to shoot it out over the right way to put jam and cream on your scones. They've been recruiting gang members together for what looks a real messy situation.
Jesse Jams and his gang reckons we should put jam on cream, and Fat Floyd Garret reckons that cream should be put on jam. Now its time to sort out the situation once and for all.
As the law around these parts I'm here to tell you where I stand on the matter. I've heard that in some parts of town some people are hitching their wagon to the Jams gang and actually put the jam on the scone before the cream! Nothing could be more wrong. Its cream first and then the jam. Lashings of cream then a dollop of jam on the scone top with the other half of the scone placed on top. So if you know what's good for you and you want to stay on the right side of the law then I guess you should make your choice now.
OK , so I might have taken liberties with the 'West' here, the real Cream Tea debate is centered around the West of England between Devon and Cornwall. Each lays claim to the Cream Tea recipe and each has a preference for the spreading of jam and cream on scones.

High Tea from High Noon

Taking Afternoon Tea is getting really popular again, and afternoon tea or as it is often called High Tea is the place to eat scones with jam and cream.
There are of course lots of other great things to eat at afternoon tea such cakes of all types and really nice sandwiches. In recent years It looked like tea drinking was losing out to coffee drinking, but the refreshing break has become a refreshing and popular afternoon social experience again. Afternoon tea doesn't necessarily come cheap. Leading hotel restaurants in London can charge as much as £50 (75$) per head! Sheer indulgence I'd say. Mind you we can recreate the afternoon tea at home much more economically with a nice china tea set, home made cakes and scones.
The modern tradition of afternoon high tea is credited to Anna Russell. The Duchess Of Bedford who needed refreshment to sustain her between early breakfast and late evening dinner which was the norm in the 18th century. What side do you take in the great Jam or Cream first debate?
Whose side are you on in the Cream Tea shoot out? Are you a cream or jam first type of person?
are you with Jesse Jams or Fat Lloyd Garret?
What is the correct order for putting jam and cream in a scone?

Jam first. I'm with Jesse Jams
It's cream first, I'm with Fat Lloyd Garret
Squidoo-Freak says:
Cream first! Cream would be in place if butter to turn the dish into something more indulgent - and you don't put butter on top of jam. End of story! :)
creativecvdesign says:
cream first then jam
Tipi says:
I'm lost here, never had a scone, so I'll go with the crowd!
Peter Black says:
You idiots. Its cream frst, then jam. Authority: The Queen.
MrsPotts says:
Cream first, of course, and then jam or fruit curd...definitely more cream than jam.
MrsPotts says:
Cream first, of course, just like butter and then the jam or fruit curd...with definitely more cream than jam!
alexanderj says:
Cream first because its like putting butter on. The jam comes next.

- Sometimes I take afternoon tea. Sometimes it's a morning thing. Sometimes a great white tea is lovely as I wind down before bed.
I love a good black tea with cream and a cinnamon scone! Starbucks actually has GREAT scones--not too moist, not too dry--for a scone on the run. Many stores can warm them in an oven, too.
I've never had cream on a scone. What kind of cream would one use?
