Released in May of 2008, Age of Conan: Hyboria Adventures has been rumored to outsell World of Warcraft's 350,000 in its first week of sale. At a reported 1 million copies, Funcom's massively multi-player online role-playing game has clearly made waves in the online gaming world.AOC: Hyboria Adventures is based-on Robert E. Howard's Conan novel "Hour Of The Dragon" and Norweigan game designer Funcom made online gaming fans a big treat by making leveling-up in the game a more absorbing and less repetitive task. This isn't your typical turn-based combat, auto-target MMORPG where leveling-up becomes an arduous and mind-numbing exercise in wasting time. Leveling in AOC becomes more interesting and a bit addictive as players discover there are several number of ways to decimate their opponents. Not only that- the six different attack styles can be strung together in different multiple attack series to produce more powerful combos.
The game is set in (yup, you guessed it) Hyboria and players have 80 levels of pure unadulterated digital fantasy-adventure to easily escape the world food and crude oil crisis for a few hours. It may have even beaten sales for Blizzard Entertainment's own hit MMORPG, World of Warcraft already.Age Of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is the first installment of the series of games based on "Hour Of the Dragon"- a sword and sorcery fantasy novel by renowned 1930's author Robert E. Howard. The game is set in the Hyborian Age a year after the events in Howard's novel.
A large part of AOC's appeal is its combat engine appropriately called "Real Combat System" and differs from the automatic (read: dull) hack-n-slash style of other rpg games in that there are six different ways of attacking. You can slash diagonally downwards or upwards from either side, hack straight down on the victim's head, or do a straight thrust through the mid-section. Different combinations can be strung together resulting in more powerful attacks with heavier damage. This combat system can be used on one-on-one battles or within groups or formations with other players on foot or even mounted on a steed.
With the fun and unique gameplay Age Of Conan offers, leveling-up is a lot less repetitive and monotonous. This is a big plus as there are 80 whole levels to go through and leveling-up is really necessary before any large-scale player versus player action can be had.
