Dealing with Dog Aggression

If you have a Pitbull, I strongly recommend that you check out The Pitbull Guide for the essential information that all Pitbull owners must know.

Dogs are by nature aggressive and we are all aware that many dogs are capable of seriously injuring people and other animals. If you have an aggressive dog, it is vitally important that he receives the correct dog obedience training at a young age, before he injures you or someone else.

If a dog is aggressive towards you or your family members, it is due to his perception of his ranking within the household. Dogs are pack animals so he is displaying dominance behavior. Your dog sees the hierarchy of the family structure no differently than that of a dog pack. If he sees himself in a higher position than you or your family members, he'll become aggressive. It is essential that the dog owner assert him/herself as the "alpha dog".

I cannot stress enough the importance of good dog obedience training for all dogs, but particularly for one that is aggressive.

Training Aggressive Dogs

Aggression is natural for dogs and everyone knows that dogs can seriously wound people and other animals. However, there are methods available to dog owners for training aggressive dogs. If you are dealing with an aggressive dog, it is vital that he receives the correct dog obedience training right away, before someone is injured.

Here's a fantastic guide for training aggressive dogs that you should take a look at: Training Aggressive Dogs.

Aggression towards strangers and aggression towards family members are the most usual types of dog aggression. These two types of dog aggression occur for several reasons so should be treated differently.

Aggression to Strangers

Dogs will often dislike unfamiliar people and other animals until they have a chance to get used to being around them. Getting dogs accustomed to being with people and animals they don't know is called socialization. It's impossible to overly stress the necessity of socialization in your dog's training. You're probably wondering how socialization can stop aggressive dogs from attacking the mailman or pizza delivery boy. A dog that has been socialized will start to understand that these new adventures can be pleasurable instead of being scary.

Your dog should learn this important lesson as a puppy. If your dog is frequently around various kinds of people (for example, men in uniform, elderly people, young children, teens, people with umbrellas or wearing helmets in a relaxed and fun environment, the safer your dog will be around strangers.

If you are trying to find a good venue for socializing your pet, group training sessions, often held by large pet stores or at a veterinary clinic, are a good idea. During these sessions, your dog will be taught how to interact with strange dogs. He will also learn that there is no reason for him to be afraid of the strangers at these sessions. He should not feel overwhelmed at these sessions - begin slowly to allow his tolerance to grow over time.

Aggression to Family Members

The most common reasons for dogs showing aggression to their human family are:

* Your dog is trying to safeguard his stuff (food, toys, etc.) from an apparent danger (that is to say you or your family members). This highly possessive behavior (called resource guarding) is quite normal in dogs.

* Such resource guarding behavior is a clear display of dominance and relates to your dog's perceived ranking in the hierarchy of your household. To your dog, your family composition is no different from that of a dog pack. A dog that sees himself in a loftier position than his master will act aggressively.

As a lower ranked dog wouldn't behave in an aggressive manner towards a dog that was higher in the pecking order, resource guarding is a clear indication of dominant behavior.

The best way to stop dog aggression is to provide consistent dog obedience training, which will make your dog understand that you are the boss or "alpha dog". Your "alpha dog" status can be strengthened with rewards such as treats and praise when he reacts appropriately to a command, and with "time-out" for bad dog behavior.
