Dog Aggression - Does Your Dog Display Aggressive Dog Tendencies?
A steadily growing problem in the United States is the Aggressive Dog - whether it be dog and food aggression, or whether people want to turn it around and say it's an aggressive breed dog - But there is no doubt that aggressive dog attacks are increasing. There is also very little understanding out there on the aggressive dog. That, too, needs to be turned around.

For what reasons does a dog become an aggressive dog? Is he born an aggressive dog? Is he made an aggressive dog by treatment he receives from his masters? Is it from boredom, lack of exercise or "job" or mental stimulation? Once again, no doubt, a lot of controversy surrounds this and each dog aggression case has unique characteristics.
But the biggest contributor to the aggressive dog behavior problem is not aggressive dog breeds, or dog to dog aggression, or need of training for aggressive dogs. The biggest contributor is lack of education -- People are not educated on how to approach and handle dogs in the first place!
My goal in writing this lens is to try to help people understand the symptoms of aggression in dog, how to avoid dogs that display aggressive dog tendencies, and how to avoid adopting dogs that have it. Below I'll tell you what to do if your currently have an aggressive dog - and what NOT to do, because some common actions will only increase aggression in dog.
How Do You Know if Your Dog is Aggressive? What are Some Symptoms?
Your dog is loving and so cute most of the time ... until suddenly he's demanding, willful, or growling, nipping aggressive dog...
How do you really know if your generally adorable pet has aggressive dog tendencies that will escalate into real problems if not corrected? The picture at the right is just play (notice the ears are back) - so how do you know when to be concerned? If your dog refuses to allow you to touch his food or toys - to groom him, touch him, remove him from an area - or refuses to allow other people or animals near you, then you have an underlying mental issue of dog aggression, that can easily spiral out of control. It WILL get worse!
If you are petting your dog and he grabs your hand to stop you from continuing - or even to demand more affection - make sure that you correct the problem right away. Even in play, that is not appropriate. It's kind of like teaching a child "keep your hands to yourself."
Your dog is being possessive of people or things, and is asserting his own dominance - which if not checked will escalate into serious dog aggression problems. And people wonder why their furry little baby snaps into a nipping, biting little terror!
Is this your dog? "He has a wonderful relationship with the entire family - But I'd like him not to eat the neighbors!"

this 3 year old aggressive dog has now been rehabilitated.
3 year old Human Aggressive dog
His owner came to me by a chance meeting. He had already been bitten 4 times (face, hand, arm, arm -all stitches), his girlfriend once in the hand (stitches), his girlfriend's father (hand - stitches) and his own mother (hand - stitches, permanent nerve damage). I'm very happy to update that he has overcome his aggression and is now a part of the family. He can actually play with the kids now!

What Kind of Dog Aggression Problem Does Your Dog Have?
Dog Aggression can have a variety of causes as well as different levels of severity. Tell us about your dog's Aggressive Dog Behavior.
How To Watch Out For Aggressive Dog Tendencies in Rescued Dog Adoptions
So you want to adopt a rescued dog from a shelter or dog rescue organization. Check out the organization! And get a Dog Behavior expert to help with dog evaluation.
Some shelters conduct thorough temperament evaluations and health checks, and cull the dangerous or aggressive dog. These can be among the best places to find a good pet - especially if you want a mature dog.Other organizations take ANY dog and adopt it out to ANY person without evaluation or warning of costly and terminal illnesses or dangerous psychological and aggressive dog problems. I've seen firsthand serious diseases and dog behavior problems that many shelter dogs come out with - and most people are not equipped to deal with them.
Try not to use human psychology to interpret what those sad-looking eyes are saying to you. A lot of it is not really "I want to be with you," but "I want out of here now!" Many signals of latent dog aggression are subtle and missed by the untrained eye - So it's a good idea to take a neutral dog behavior professional with you.
If a dog catches your eye, have him brought into a room with you and all members of your family present. Do not do this with any immediate family member missing. Notice the dog's reaction to everyone - adult and child. If he isn't comfortable with somebody (adult or child), don't take him home! Don't take him if he isn't trying to interact with any member of your family within 10 to 15 minutes.
Then leave the room for at least 15 minutes. If he starts barking his head off, don't take him home.
Ask a shelter worker for a toy and a treat. Let her use the test hand in front of you to verify that the shelter dog's postures don't show any danger whatsoever while your family is present.
There's a lot of encouragement to adopt shelter dogs, which is a good thing. My dog is a rescued dog. But I got him from a reputable organization - not the shelter off the street that takes and adopts out just any dog. The evaluations are a bit too carefully done - but hey, better safe than sorry!

What NOT to do if there are Signs of Dog Aggression and Dog Dominance in your Family Dog?
"All this prevention stuff is very nice - but I already have an Aggressive Dog. What about me? What should I Do or Not Do?"
But you're asking the right questions. So WHAT can you do?
First, I'm going to tell you exactly what NOT to do.
- Do NOT enroll in dog obedience class. They always make this kind of problem worse.
- Do NOT get a traditional dog trainer. All you will end up with is a dog who comes, sits, lies down ... and still barks, growls, bites, attacks. You must address the underlying psychological problem. No amount of "training" can do that.
- Do NOT use dog food and treats for "positive reinforcement training." That's a waste of time and doesn't work with the aggressive dog. Period. And it could become dangerous.
- Do NOT use physical punishment. Shouting and hitting will only make the aggressive dog or dominant dog intensify his aggression. You must be very firm and assertive, but you must do it right - according to instruction!
- Do NOT shut the dog away in solitary confinement. That will only intensify the dog aggression. The more isolated a dog becomes, the more he seeks out a target upon which to release his frustration.
- Do NOT listen to dog trainers who tell you the dog is untrainable, cannot be rehabilitated, and must be euthanized - Not until you get an expert evaluation by someone who understands dog psychology, the dog whisper, and dog behavior modification. These are necessary skills for rehabilitation of the aggressive dog.
Try to avoid situations that trigger the aggressive dog behavior. And get a professional with the qualifications that I describe - IMMEDIATELY!

What Should I DO If My Dog Displays Dog Aggression or Dog Dominance?
You need a professional who understands dog whispering, dog psychology, and dog behavior problems. Don't try to fix it yourself. And don't be afraid to admit you have a problem!
For your family's safety and that of others, do take reasonable precautions with your aggressive dog. Supervise or restrict your dog's access to people and areas of your house and yard to avoid trigger points and uncontrolled responses. Heed the warning, though - That does not mean isolate the dog all the time. Isolation breeds further frustration and intensifies dog aggression. It makes everything worse!
So you need to find something your dog can do to expend physical and psychological energy. Your dog needs a "job" with physical and mental challenge. Run the dog by a golf cart, bicycle or roller blades, take regular focused and disciplined walks or swims, etc. - twice a day for 45 minutes. It's also important not to feed the dog until after he walks. He needs to "earn" what he gets from you.
Bottom line: If you have an aggressive dog, you MUST get professional help. This is not a "do-it-yourselfer"... And it is only going to get worse. Guaranteed.
The necessary professional must know dog psychology and the dog whisper - no regualar "dog trainer" will do in dog aggression cases. If you don't have an appropriate dog behavior trainer nearby - I'm available for telephone consultations about your aggressive dog problem and have a track record of success with specific telephonic guidance to end dog aggression. For the more severe cases - even "red zone" cases - I will travel to your location. Either way, Contact DogWhisperWoman with your Aggressive Dog Problem.
