Welcome to the Aggressive Inline Skating lens. I hope that you find the information here useful. If there is anything that I have left out, or if you have additional questions about the sport, please feel free to contact me. Also, please use the stars above to rate this lens so I know how I'm doing.
HISTORY
The sport of "aggressive" inline skating came into the public light in the mid 90's with the help of ESPN's X-Games. However, the sport started with kids on inline skates jumping stairs and other obstacles. From those early recreational inline skates, these kids started making modifications after learning how to do other tricks and grinds. They attached grind plates to help the thin plastic frames last longer, soul plates to even out the base of the inline skate for "soul" tricks, and would grind down the hard, more durable skateboard wheels to use as the inner grind wheels on their skates.
Aggressive inline progressed more than anyone could have dreamed in the last ten years, however the sport has also been shunned by the corporations who used to support it including television and cable stations. Those who have seen what our pros have to offer know that the sport is incredible. Skaters are doing 1080 degree spins over giant gaps and tricks that we could not have dreamed of even a couple of years ago. The level of difficulty and the style that today's pros bring to the sport is unmatched (at least in my mind) by any other sport out there.
Skates Today
Almost every part of the skate is now replaceable; from the liners to the frames to the boots or skins. Not only can you replace a worn out or broken part of a skate, but now skaters can express their indviduality.
SET UP TYPES
Along with customizable skates, and UFS, we have also seen new types of frames, not just the standard four wheels, evenly spaced. Rollerbladers can now choose from a variety of frame types and set ups.
Flat Rocker - This type of set up refers to having a standard frame and all four wheels the same size and hardness on each skate. The benefit to this type of set up is speed since all four wheels on each skate are touching the ground.
Anti-Rocker - This, again means having a standard frame, however the two outside wheels are larger and softer than the two inside wheels. The smaller, harder inside wheels help with grinding on surfaces such as rails or ledges and are less likely than a larger, softer wheel to catch on these surfaces during grinds.
Freestyle - Freestyle is the name for a newer type of frame and set up where the frame only accomodates two outer wheels. Rather than having a small surface between the two inner wheels to grind, skaters now have the entire area between the two outer wheels for tricks. This allows skaters to grind wider surfaces as well as to more easily "switch up" or change from one grind to another while on a ledge or rail.
