Guide to Dog Agility Training

Ranked #17,345 in Pets & Animals, #498,746 overall

Dog agility training is a great sport, hobby or competition wise, to help alleviate the extra energy in your dog. It's also a great way for you to burn your excess calories.

You, as the handler, will direct your dog, off leash, through several obstacles in a race for time and accuracy. You must not touch the obstacles or the dog throughout the course. You must you your voice and movement in order to direct the dog properly, which means a great deal of training must occur.

The Basics of Agility

The Basics of agility are fairly simple. You must fully understand each obstacle in its own in order to be able to successfully run a course.

There are several obstacles that range from various jumps and hoops, weaves, tunnels, and contact obstacles.

Jumps include bar jumps, broads jumps, water jumps, wing jumps, panel jumps, and tire/hoop jumps. Depending on the competition, other various jumps and hurdles can be added.

There are two different types of tunnels which include the chute (collapsed) and the pipe (rigid).

The contact obstacles include the A Frame, Seesaw, and the Dog walk.

Training of Agility

Once you have decided to work agility with your dog, you need to begin a rigorous course of training, especially, if you have decided to train for competition.

You should begin with Basic Training, which includes commands such as stay, wait, and come.

You should really focus on Reinforcement Training and throw in some Clicker Training while you work. Reinforcement training is the most effective training technique; it reinforces the behaviors that you would like to see increased in the dog's behaviors. Clicker training, is a form of reinforcement training, which is the most effective.

When training your puppy or dog agility, you may want to look into target training, in which the pup learns to 'target' a particular object. The dog must touch his nose to the object in order to recieve his reward.

When in competition, you cannont use treats, but when training, it will make the learning process quicker if you have a food motivated dog, otherwise you can use praise as the dog's reward.

The Course

The agility course is designed and laid out by the agility judge(s). In it's smallest form, the obstacles must fit into a 100ft x 100ft area.

The dog must perform the course with accuracy and speed in order to make high marks. It is the handler's responsibility to assess the course and decide upon the appropriate winning strategy in directing the dog through the course.

The dog must start and finish at the same, designated Start/End line. The run is timed in order to create a higher level of competition.
