THE GOLDEN YEARS CAN BE GOLDEN - ITS UP TO YOU!

Aging and Health And Wellness go hand and hand. Some might look at aging and conclude that your best days are behind you. Not SO...read on:

Numerous studies suggest that happiness in old age might have more to do with attitude than health. In a recent study examining 500 Americans between the ages of 60 and 98 who were independent and had lived with a range of age related diseases (cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and a host of other illnesses), the participants rated their happiness on average 8, on a scale of 1-10, (10 being the best). Research led by Dilip Jeste of the University of California at San Diego, discovered that optimism and "effective coping styles" were the most important factor in happiness in aging. Not perfect health and undisturbed wellness.

Another study that followed 12,640 middle-aged Hungarians found that those who felt their lives had meaning had significantly lower rates of cancer and heart disease. The importance of having some sort of purpose to your life is necessary to our well-being. Basically it means finding a meaningful reason to get out of bed in the morning. The two most fatally dangerous years of your life are the year you were born and the year you retire. Losing an everyday purpose goes beyond mental well being. Today numerous studies are connecting mental health, particularly stress, with physiological symptoms and diseases.

A lack of purpose is similar, a mental issue that can have seriously adverse effects on your body. While we can't stop the aging process, we can learn to age gracefully, we can learn how to cope by doing

LIVING TO 100 - Would you want to live to be 100?

We often talk about the retirement years being the golden years. I think that may be true in some of the different stages of aging. I am 62 and I look at myself as being in early old age. I am still active and my health is good but I am starting to notice some things, my hip joints hurt after I sit for awhile. I don't hear everything that people say and I'm tired at the end of the day.

When I reach my 80s and 90s, I know that these years will be much more of a struggle. Mentally, I will slow down, physically, I'll slow down, most likely there will be a lot more problems. I think it helps me think about how I want to get ready for that aging process, (if I live that long), and I know I won't be able to maintain my vitality until I'm a hundred. I think there are a lot of things that are worse than dying, that's for sure. I think living too long often is a dilemma. I can say that as I watch my father's health fail with Alzheimers.

Your Know Your Getting Older When...

List of biomarkers that show IF you are getting older

This list might be a bit overwhelming as you read it - when you get to the bottom of the list there is some good news. So read on...

AS WE AGE OUR -

Muscle mass decreases on the average about 7 lbs. per decade.
Fat increases as a percentage of body weight.
Strength, energy and speed of the body decreases.
Base Metabolic Rate (metabolism) decreases.
Aerobic Capacity, the capacity to process oxygen, decreases.
Body cells become resistant to insulin.
LDL Cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) and triglicerides increase, and HDL Cholesterol ("good" cholesterol) falls
Blood pressure increases.
Kidney functions decrease.
We lose neurons in our brain. This leads to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Senile Dementia.
Testosterone in men, and estrogen and progesterone in women, drops.
Sexual desire drops.
Thyroid (a hormone which affects metabolism) drops.
Melatonine (a hormone which regulates the body clock) drops.
DHEA (a hormone precursor to testosterone and estrogen) drops.
The thickness of skin decreases, resulting in more wrinkles.
Water proportion in the body and in the skin, drops. This results (among other things) in dryer skin, and more wrinkles.
Sense of hearing drops.
Sense of taste drops... "everything tastes the same"
Sense of vision, especially capacity to read small letters in low light, decreases.
Hair falls and loses its color (it becomes white).
The thymus gland, the master of the immune system, shrinks and atrophys, thus lessening our immune system.
Our liver, brain, and other critical organs shrink in size, thus affecting their functions.
"Deep sleep" becomes more scarce and less profound.
Digestion becomes slower and less complete
The retina of the eye becomes thinner, in many cases detaching.

If you got to the bottom of this list - you might think I'm not sure if I want to get older. The good news is that for everything that can happen, for each sign of aging there is a cause, and there is a good medical therapy to slow it down or stop the sign of aging completely, or even reverse the course.

Aging, Health and Wellness Go Hand and Hand

Its Important To Listen To Your Body As You Age But Its Vital To Stay Active.

Aging, Health and Wellness go hand and hand - its important to listen to your body as you age but its vital to stay active.

In a recent Washington Post report, a number of studies suggest that aging does contribute to overall happiness. Despite America's tendency to champion youth with it's speedy metabolism and sag-free skin, more and more studies are supporting the notion that the golden years really are golden. When you're talking overall contentment and happiness, elderly people tend to win. The recent findings stems from a General Social Survey that interviewed 50,000 Americans year after year to see how they change with age. The results? Like a fine wine, evidently..

Exercise and A Healthy Diet Are The Answer To A Long And Healthy Life

The buzz words for senior citizens today are "active aging." Active aging means that we remain active and strong in our later years to prevent the loss of mobility. Loss of mobility in seniors can drastically change their lifestyles and some might never recover. But, a daily health plan that includes healthy diet and exercises designed to keep joints moving and the mind sharp can help us stay mobile far into our senior years. How's that for an incentive?

As we age, we lose flexibility, muscle and bone - and our strength may falter. These losses may mean that we also lose mobility and independence and become fragile and at risk for falls and fractures - plus other diseases associated with aging. But, don't be discouraged about those disheartening facts of getting older.

Regular exercise (emphasize regular) such as strength training (weights), flexibility (stretching), aerobics (for cardio health) and balance can greatly reduce your risk for mobility loss. Even if you already have a certain amount of mobility loss or health problems, there are things you can do to improve your well-being and your fitness level.

We are born with a perfectly clean circulatory system. But by the time we are 50 years old, if you could see a cross-section of your veins and arteries, and depending upon how much you have abused your body with sugar, fat foods, cigarettes and alcohol etc, they are looking like a clogged up sewer. In addition to cholesterol, they are clogged up with calcium, and veins and arteries have lost a good share of flexibility. This causes blood to circulate more slowly, and so less food, water, and oxygen get to all parts of the body, including the brain. This is a root cause of the loss of brain cells, and organ and gland atrophy.

And what to do about it: Avoid as much sugar and carbohydrates and fat in your diet, as possible. Vitamins will help prevent free radical damage, exercise and eat right.

Some Of My Favorites

When I discovered I had High Cholesterol - I found the Cholesterol Down Book, it helped me get back on track with my diet and exercise.

I also bought the American heart Cookbook. These two are a must if your fighting a cholesterol problem.

I started wearing earplugs and I can tell you I am sleeping much better, I wear the mask when we travel.

My children love their sleep aid, they even travel with it.

I included the diabetes book because I know so many people who have diabetes, if your on the edge its easier to help yourself with diet and exercise alone.

Wikipedia Defines Aging As:

Aging in humans refers to a multidimensional process of physical, psychological, and social change. Some dimensions of aging grow and expand over time, while others decline. Reaction time, for example, may slow with age, while knowledge of world events and wisdom may expand. Research shows that even late in life potential exists for physical, mental, and social growth and development.

Yes, you are right, money is a huge factor. I was laid off of my job in 2010 when I was 62. I was not ready to retire. The recession and my age have worked against me in finding a job. I will be 65 in October and so far were making it, we've made numerous changes in our lifestyle.

As a rehab doctor, I deal a lot with senior patients. I couldn't agree more that exercise plays an important role to maintain physical wellness, and if I can add... mental alertness and cognitive function. This is a great lens! Love it!

Thank you for your comment. My father worked until he was 85. He was a chiropractor and his love of helping others kept him alive. He was mentally alert until Alzheimers took over his life. He would have been very upset to see himself, as he was in the end
