How to age Gracefully?

Anti-aging and the search for everlasting youth are going to be myths for a long time to come. Getting older and wiser are a part of life; as much as death and dying are! No one can prevent getting older; however we can definitely age better!

Beyond a certain age, doing rigorous exercises too would become a chore and a painful past time. How then can one age gracefully?

For serious health conditions, consult your doctor / physician before taking up rigorous exercise schedules! However, you don't have to consult anyone to enjoy healthy natural foods. :)

"If you have health, you probably will be happy, and if you have health and happiness, you have all the wealth you need, even if it is not all you want."

~ Elbert Hubbard

Know the Human Body

To age gracefully - one needs to know the human body! All of us know that the human body is made up of flesh, bones and blood. But, to understand how our body functions, we need to know the simple fact that the human body is a complex chemical factory, in a continuous state of operation. The food that we eat, the water and the air that we consume are the simple inputs. The outputs are well, the faecal matter, urine, perspiration etc. which help flush out the processed matter along with the harmful oxidants and other chemical by-products.

Apart from the basic inputs that feed this 'factory', there are so many unknown inputs like pollution, pollen, harmful chemicals, and toxic matter which enter into the system - which alter the way the 'normal' functions are to be done.

Human Emotions

Whenever we react to any situation with feelings of fear, anger, joy, pain etc. they are nothing but the effects of the chemicals (hormones) secreted in our 'factory'! Hence excessive negative feelings of any order over extended periods of time, tend to change our bodily composition, enough to lead to conditions like depression, insomnia, anxiety etc.

Hence from time immemorial, the progenitors of the eastern Vedic culture propounded the idea of meditation for keeping the mind in a balanced state.

Oxidative Stress

Apart from the normal human reactions which lead to distress, the current scenario of 'stress' is brought about by the changing lifetimes. These days and times, most of us are forced to live in very competitive environments; which have led to many lifestyle disorders creeping in. Environmental pollution, dust, smog, smoke, industrial fumes, preservatives and artificial additives in food, microbial content in water etc. have forever altered the natural way the body functions today. As a result, the human body is no longer capable of handling the excess load that is being placed on the system. Hence one comes across people with heart conditions, mental stress, obesity, diabetes, premature aging etc.

Hence to compensate for the additional burden placed on the human body; it is wiser to take regular doses of additional antioxidants to offset the difference. Natural sources of rich antioxidants are recommended over synthetic ones for the obvious reasons of the unknown side-effects which would possibly complicate the system.

When you know 'you are what you eat', and learn to take care of yourself and feel good about yourself - you cannot help feel happy and healthy! A happy person is a wealthy person. So, live in wealth and grow your natural wealth!

Good luck and God bless!

I'd say probably the most important thing to aging gracefully is a healthy diet.

I believe in growing old gracefully and not getting into the whole plastic surgery to "stay young". I don't even dye my hair, and refuse to. I am 34 right now, and am very proud to say I have made it to this age. The only times I think about growing old is where my children are concerned... I hope to be around for as long as I can for them (and my fiance, because I know he would be absolutely lost without me - and I without him).

Most probably all of us we're a bit scarred of aging even if we're perfectly aware that is an irreversible action. The hardest part is to be in peace with ourselves, know who we are, live a nice life, take as much possible good care of our body, mind and soul, be content with whatever we can grab (not referring to materialistic items) and enjoy very simple things. When we're not alone (especially inside) we may learn to pass thru life with serenity and joy... Easy to say, difficult to apply and achieve! But maybe this is the tricky part of our existence...

I'm a 'No - not helpful' - sorry, but I'm much older than you, and believe me, at this stage the option I have chosen of Ageing Disgracefully is a far more realistic choice. (And it's more fun, too!)

Since it looks to be colorful and information-packed, the Fat Facts poster you've posted above caught my eye. I am very surprised to see polyunsatured fats listed as inferior to monunsaturated. As I understand it, polyunsaturated fats from walnuts, flax seed, and fatty fish like salmon and trout provide tremendous brain and heart-health benefits. And these are polyunsaturated fats. Am I mistaken that mono and polyunsaturated fats are equally important? Many thanks for the good info you're sharing here.

I'm wandering through aging the same way I've wandered through life. I'm enjoying myself. I seem to mentally collect scientific studies that agree with what I want to do, I read the others but usually ignore them.
