Aging Beautifully

Wouldn't it be nice to have a "fountain of youth"?? But, maybe we have one in our own backyard and we don't even know it. The "fountain of youth" is never what you expect it to be. :)

*Wash Up 

Freshly plucked brows are ripe for infection, so be sure that you have freshly washed hands so that bacteria cannot be transferred. And just in case you aren't happy with your tweezers, to date, the best I have ever used are by Tweezerman!

6 Ways To Slow Things Down 

1. Pack in a couple of things that you love to do each day. You would be amazed at how much that can help. If you are having a miserable day, trust me, it shows on your face.

2. Never go out of the house without your sunblock. I was reading somewhere that ALL of those minutes add up!

3. Make weekends as much fun as they were when you were in your teens. These two days should not be a continuation of your week. That means a whole lot less work.

4. Learn to laugh more. It can be as simple as reading the comics every Saturday morning. It's something that my husband and daughter look forward to every weekend.

5. Increase your fruits and veggies to between 5 and 7 servings a day. I know that it's not quite like having a croissant with coffee in the afternoon (which I would prefer to do) but the veggies can they reduce your chances of getting some forms of cancer, and they are easy on the waistline.

6. Go for a nice leisurely walk around the block. It's not calorie burning that you want to do today. The aim is just to enjoy!

I only wish I knew what I know about sunblock when I was a teen. Don't even want to think of all of those days when I used to bake out in the sun.

Things That Are Changing 

I know that I shouldn't try, but nothing annoys me more than NOT being able to keep up with my 20 something daughter. I can go through the same exercise program and be breathless and she hasn't even broken a sweat. The fact that I have 29 years on her doesn't seem to carry any weight in my mind.

However... that is no reason to let things slide... and they definitely will if I don't keep those exercises up.

Just finished and I'm breathless. :(

*Racking Up Extra Steps 

Decide on how many steps you want to take over the duration of a day. For the purpose of this tip, I have chosen five thousand steps. It might sound like a lot unless you are very active, but there are a lot of tricks to help you work your way up to that number. Here's a few to get you started.
-walk around the kitchen as the coffee is dripping
-go for a walk around the block
-if you are headed for the bathroom, choose the one upstairs instead of the closest
-collect the mail instead of letting your husband pick it up on the way home
-empty the dishwasher a few pieces at a time and be sure to incorporate a lot of bending and stretching for good measure.
-sneak in a lot of five minute walks. They are quick and a few minutes here and there can all add up.

I was talking to the doctor about this one day and she just laughed... Take children's vitamins then." They are easy to take and they don't taste half bad either. Be a Kid Again

A friend who has long since moved away used to do this all the time. She would slash the hot dog in eight places and then put it on a stick over the coals of a fire. As it cooked, it curled looking just like a spider. Not sure if this is a lost art or what!!

Anyone have any better directions than that?? I can remember that my kids thought that it was really cool! Now I wish I had written down EXACTLY how she slashed the hot dogs. Someday, I just might have grandchildren to impress! ;)

So, I'm thinking that "being a kid again" is a great way to slow down the aging clock!

*Slowing Down 

As you age, nails begin to slow down just how fast they can grow. That obviously explains why as a teen, your nails seem to grow with little effort from you.

How fast you get rid of those dead skin cells is slowing down as well. We might have got away with a simply cleansing system when we were younger, but now we need to exfoliate to bring out that complexion that is hiding under all of that dead skin.

Here is something interesting... the skin can make new cells twice as fast when you are asleep. Now isn't that a really good reason to hit the sheets a few hours earlier tonight!!

Exercising in the Kitchen! 

As I mentioned earlier, I know that we have to exercise to stay healthy, but we have to find the kind of exercises that won't bore you silly. Now that's the trick and it's different for everyone.

Swimming... has to be tops on my list, but the water has to be warm. Wading into ice cold water, kind of kills the fun. But I have found that vacationing in Florida during the summer months, takes care of the cold water issue. And during the summer, renting a house for a couple of weeks is so cheap! Now, if I could just find a way of living there permanently, I would have the waistline of a twenty something!

Kitchen Exercising... I look at it this way. If you have to be in the kitchen, you might as well get something out of it. So with that in mind, I make sure that I use the shelves that are going to make me stretch for what I'm looking for. I do have a step stool, but I try to avoid it unless I REALLY need it. I keep thinking about the workout my waistline is receiving as I stretch to grab that can of something or other lol...

Make friends with your bathroom scales?? I don't know if I agree with that or not. I threw mine out long ago. I found that the reading it would give me each morning would decide my mood. Not a good way to start the day! I guess it's all in the way you use those scales!

Facial Exercises... I have to admit that I'm torn on this one. I have found about as many reasons not to do these exercises as I have found in favor of them. But what really scares me are the articles that say it all about the movement of these muscles over the years that gave you the wrinkles in the first place. Would you want to chance it??

And lastly... the old walk around the block which I'm planning to do as soon as I finish this article. The colder it is outside, the faster I walk. That has to burn a few calories right??
