A journey in flash back
Why did Agneepath (1990) inspire for a remake?
The original Agneepath, released in 1990 showcased the biggest actors of it's time. Amitabh Bachhan, Mithun Chakraborty and Danny Dengzopa. The title was taken from a poem penned by late Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan, one of the best poets India has ever produced and Amitabh's father. The poem is recited at the beginning of the movie and creates a magnetic link that continues through the movie, especially in the climax, both literally and metaphorically. If you wanna know the movie's success, you just need to know the fact that Bachhan and Mithunda were honored with National awards of that year for their terrific performances. The story is about a man named Vijay Deenanath Chauhan (You'll get goosebumps when Bachhan pronounces his name with this mountain like voice). His father, Deenanath, was mercilessly killed by the then crime lord called Kancha Cheena played by supreme authority by a classy actor, Danny Dengzopa. Vijay swears to avenge his father's massacre and sets on an untiring journey to become an angry young man who demolishes everything and everyone who tries to become a hurdle in his goal. I'm not gonna tell you the whole plot. I want you to watch this superb movie.

Agneepath review

Let us begin with some stats first.
Directed by: Karan Malhotra
Produced by: Karan Johar
Playtime: 2 hours 30 mins
Actors: Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra, Rishi Kapoor, Om Puri, Zarina Wahab, Kanika Tiwari
The plot begins with a school teacher named Deenanath Chauhan who was respected and looked upon by the villagers of Mandwa. He used to preach his son the poem called 'Agneepath'. Mandwa was ruled by a kingpin by the name Kancha Cheena, played extra ordinarily by Sanjay Dutt. He looks menacing, terrific and with his towering personality resembles the Diablo (read Devil). Kancha planned to con the villagers by grabbing their land through treachery and the teacher opposed him. Deenanath was then beaten up and hung on a tree by Kancha for obstructing his ambition. His son, who laters becomes Hrithik Roshan, avenges his father's murder.
A new character, Rauf Lala, played by Rishi Kapoor has been introduced in this version who runs an illegal business of girl child trafficking. Young Vijay joins Rauf's gang to take the advantage of his power and status and succeeds in building a trust. Vijay had to get seperated from his young sister and mother because they didn't agree over his career option. The character of inspector Gaitonde played by Om Puri is quite typical. Although knowing Vijay's intentions, he cares for his safety and tells him to back off. But Vijay sets a meeting with Kancha Cheena in Mandwa itself to solve this once and for all. I ain't gonna tell you the climax and spoil the exciting end to the film but you gonna love it.

- I have few words for the intense story and artistic experience this movie created for me during.my first visit to Benares. It was a fluke that I went and a highlight for me. Even w/o subtitles - it was a memorable experience. Now I want to share this movie back home in states but really want English subtitles. Does the VLC and subtitle process you describe .srt wrk with DVD players in states? Or another way to make this happy technically? Much thxs
