What is a Green Halloween?

A Green Halloween is a movement to help make Halloween better for the environment, by sharing ways to cut down on using products that are not eco-friendly.

Want to make Halloween just a little easier on the environment this year?

Stay tuned...I will try to provide some tips and suggestions on how to do just that!

Read on for some green ideas for Halloween!

Send e-invites!

One tip that is easy and eco-friendly is this:

Instead of sending out paper invitations to your Halloween party, try sending out e-invites this year.

It is fast and you don't have to use a stamp or make a trip to the post office.

Creative Costumes

With a little creativity you can come up with a costume that is easy on the environment and your wallet.

Scour the resale shops and vintage clothing stores in your area for treasures from the past that can also make great costumes.

Even better, rummage through your closets; you may find something just perfect that you forgot you had, and you will save gas in the process which is also a plus for the environment.

Try using sheets, old clothing items, etc., to make your own costumes.

If you aren't the crafty type, or don't have time to make a costume, borrow something from a friend, or do a costume exchange with someone.

Make Your Own Makeup

Instead of buying makeup with all the additives and stuff in them, try making your own!

Face Paint Recipe

1 tsp. corn starch
1/2 tsp. water
1/2 tsp. cold cream
A few drops of food coloring as desired

Stir together cold cream and starch until well blended. Stir in water and then add desired amount of food coloring.

Wash face and skin before applying and dry thoroughly. Use your fingertips to apply to large areas. You can also paint designs using a small paint brush.

Store in an airtight container.

Makeup washes off with soap and water.

Due to some people being sensitive to certain products, please test this paint on a small area of your forearm and check your reaction before using.

Make your own treat bag

Instead of the usual plastic pumpkin or plastic bag, neither of which is very friendly for the environment, try using a recyclable or re-usable treat bag.

You can also use a decorated pillowcase, which holds a lot of treats, or try your hand at making a treat bag.

"Check out these links for great treat bag ideas and patterns!"

Decorate with items from mother nature!

Decorate your yard and house with natural products. This can include using pumpkins, gourds, straw, fall leaves, Indian corn, sticks and the like.

You can also stuff an old pair of pants and a shirt with straw and make your own scarecrow.

To me these decorations look much better than store-bought plastic ones, and you can keep them out through Thanksgiving.
