I already do most of the things listed. We still get the plastic bags at the grocery store and I either use them for the dog poop, give them to the thrift store to reuse, but they are never used just once. We could also turn off the water heater at night.

One of the best things I ever did to use less electricity was to buy one of those small ovens. I can cook almost anything in it and most of the time it doesn't take as long to cook, plus I save on my electric bill as well. One of my best tips on going green.

Dear All, I know one very good water saving tip in our offices. In our offices we use lot of water in urinal through automatic sensors. we can save water by using Bio cubes. if we put Bio cubes instead of PDCB & Naphthalene balls we need to flush only 3 times a day. with this process we save around 200 ltr. water per urinal per day. If we have 10 urinals in our office than the problem for 40 families for drinking water is solved. even you do not increase your existing cost Urinals. I request you all to save water in urinals and help those families who all are fighting for water every day. you can visit www.green-revolution.in or can contact at +919958229993 for Bio cube Urinals.

    @ Magnetic-Perpetual-Energy

That is a great point to make (more drag=more fuel consumption). Also, I fully agree that people should learn how to drive more efficiently.
  • Magnetic-Perpetual-Energy Jan 27, 2011 @ 1:50 pm | delete
Remove roof rack your from car when not in use. Roof racks significantly increase drag and can make a fuel consumption difference of around 10 to 15%.
Don't carry un-necessary items in the boot (or trunk to our US friends). Excess weight=excess consumption.
Don't accellerate too hard and once you've built up some speed try not to brake unless you really have to- ease off the gas first if you need to slow down.

Thanks for the tips. I've started some articles on green cleaning, about making products that aren't made with a bunch of chemicals you can't produce, but they are not on any of my hubs yet. If you have any more ideas about green cleaning pop on over to my page and let me know!

One of the most overlooked items in the household, I use the washing machine for washing my hands and rinsing things out (nothing too dirty, oily or with food) and then save the water, using it for my bleached items! You are adding soap anyway, saves on the water bill!

While I embrace going green, I am still having a hard time with the fluorescent bulbs. As a matter of fact, I am already doing everything else on the list, and I am even using the fluorescent bulbs in some of the lamps in my home, but they cast such an unattractive color of light, that I can't bring myself to go all in. Am hoping for an alternative solution. Fingers crossed. Great lens.

Not literally, but instead of traditional deck stains that have very high concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds, known as VOCs, which are essentially carbon-based molecules that evaporate into the atmosphere as a source of ozone depletion, choose new Zero-VOC and Low-VOC sealants, stains, and coatings for your deck. Choose light color for exterior of your home. Light colors reflect more heat than dark colors. For reflection of sun's heat and light at windowsills, light color or white color is good choice

What a great GREEN lens. It is so important for everyone to "go green" and it is so important for everyone to realize that it can be done in oh so many little green ways.
Thanks to your lens we can find small, medium and large ways we can all go green.
I have been going green for some time, but I am now retired and ready to go more green for my children, my grandchildren and their children. It is a legacy we must leave. 5 recycles and 2 lensrolls for this lens. Great job.

like the lens. There are always green tips to share. Keep up the good work. I have a green lens too title called Creating a Healthy Home
  • Monique_Nelson Jan 22, 2009 @ 6:16 pm | delete
This was a great list with a lot of options depending on your commitment level. The more I read about "greening" my lifestyle, the more I realize that most of the tips are completely reasonable. Some of the ideas may be restricted based on location; for example, my town has a wonderful recycling program, I can recycle just about everything I would otherwise throw out. However, my parents city makes it near impossible to even recycle cardboard!
Saving water and energy is a primary focus for me, and if there are any pool owners out there that would like to know how to save water and energy on their pool, check out my lens.

    Hi Megal,
Some good tips there. I wrote a lens on saving money and energy when computing, and another couple of green lenses. With the preheating oven - perhaps you could link to some info for adjusting recipe cooking times on that. Do you have any tips on the phone book - in the Uk we get them given to us like or not it seems. For tip 18, can I recommend freecycle or freemesa for that? I think I have to write more lenses on going green myself.

I think it's really important to provide simple tips like this. It's sad to say, but people are so lazy that they need to be convinced that it's easy to recycle and reduce waste! @The Homeopath - Wow, great job. I didn't think of reusing the water. But, infact I was really going towards the general public that sometimes are in to much of a hurry to really think about reusing the water.
  • The_Homeopath Aug 15, 2008 @ 12:02 am | delete
One thing I'd like to add is that baths aren't necessarily better than showers. I have 4 kids and all 5 of us use the same bath water. We also use the old bath water to flush the toilets with and water our garden with. Much more green than everyone taking separate showers!
