Umbria

Umbria is the central region of Italy, also known as the green heart of Italy. As you can see from the image, its clear why its called green! Beautiful panoramas of green hills await you in this wonderful region! The best way to discover Umbria is by sleeping in an Agriturismo Umbria, that is, a country house, which often offer also a restaurant with typical Umbrian cuisine!

Umbria is also know as a land of Saints, the most famous one being San Francesco d'Assisi. Others are his friend Santa Chiara of Assisi, San Benedetto from Norcia (and his sister Santa Scolastica), San Feliciano, first bishop of Foligno, Sant'Ubaldo from Gubbio, San Fortunato of Montefalco.

My house in Umbria

Not the film, but my real house!

Yes, this is my house, where I run a Bed and breakfast (by the way, if you want to come to Umbria, look at the website www.bebincasale.it).
It's in a small village near Montefalco and Bevagna, both famous for being two beautiful small "borghi" (villages) in Umbria.

Bevagna

The Market of the Gaite

Bevagna

BevagnaProbably of Etruscan origin, Bevagna is contemporary to Rome (it was called Mevania, probably by the name of an Etruscan noble). There are still many traces of this ancient history of Bevagfna. Besides the general structure of the city, which has developed around the cardoon and decumanus of the Roman settlement, you can see the Roman baths, decorated with splendid mosaics, a theatre, on top of which medieval houses were built, the remains of an amphiteatre outside the modern town, a column, in the center of the main square, and some architectural remains in churches aournd the town. Bevagna was known for the production of valuable paintings, called "bevagne". Today Bevagna is known for its medieval festival, called Gaite, which takes place every year in June and attracts many Italian and foreign tourists.

Montefalco

Home town of the Sagrantino

Montefalco

Montefalco is famous for the wine, especially the Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG, which iws a very tannic wine, also produced in the passito (dried) version, sweet and ideal with typical Umbria cakes and bisciuts.

Norcia

Norcia and Castelluccio

Norcia

The origins of Norcia are remote: during the Punic wars between the Romans and Phoenicians, Norcia had a leading role, as is documented by Latin historians. During Roman times it was a centre of political importance, first prefecture and later municipium. DestryedSconvolta by Lombard and Gothes, it recovered and became an active medieval centre. Its historical beauties have largely been riuned by the frequent earthquakes that devastated the town during the centuries. The first documented earthquake dates back to the first half of'300. However, thanks to a careful restoration, today the city is in its original structure, with the splendid medieval architecture. Like the near Cascia, the city gave birth to a great religious man: St. Benedict, the first monk of Christianity, and founder of the Benedictines, who lived in Norcia around 500 AC.
Inside the city you can visit many attractions, starting from the gothic church of St. Benedict. The Cathedral was built during the Renaissance, but unfortunately little remains of the original as it was restored in the Baroque period, which has changed the architectural style. Other notable example of Renaissance architecture, is the Castellina, a fortress, now the Diocesan Museum.

In the vicinity of Norcia, the town of Serravalle offers the magical atmosphere of a village lost among the green hills of Umbria. For lovers of trekking and rural expanses, Castelluccio offers a truly unique spectacle, particularly during the spring, in which, thanks to flowering, meadows take one thousand different shades merged together in a single multitude of colors.

Italy!

History of Umbria

Some historical facts about Central Italy

Traces of human settlements dating back to the Neolithic period have been found in Umbria. Many of them can be seen at the Archaeological Museum of Perugia (Museo archeologico di Perugia). Later on, around second millennium b.C., a population which was later called Umbrians established in the area of the modern Umbria, Marche and Tuscany. They gave life to many cities, which later became Roman municipii and are now the biggest cities of Umbria, such as Perugia, Todi, Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto, Foligno, Amelia and more. With the increased military strength of bordering nations (Etruscans, Sabini, Piceni and, above all, Romans), their territory was shrinking.

Etruscans

Their origin remains uncertain, but it is certain that they lived in the northern part of Umbria, north of the Tiber river. They main city was Perugia, other being Orvieto (Volsinii), Bettona (Vittuna), Bevagna (Mevania, probably derived from an Etruscan family name, Mefana). In Perugia ancient walls of the city can be seen; Perugia was a very big city, since, when Rome was only a small village, it already had defensive walls with seven entrance gates, the most famous one being the Arco Etrusco. Around Perugia there are many underground tombs, the most famous one is the Volumnii, which is visitable. Orvieto, which was called Volsinii, was an important Etruscan city, since in the vicinity there was one of the biggest Etruscan temples, where all the cities came once a year for worship; this site has not been found yet. During the Roman invasion pf Umbria, Volsinii was destroyed and the population fled to the Bolsena lake, where they built the city of Volsinii novi, now Bolsena, in Latium. Orvieto was then renamed Urbs vetus, from which the actual name is derived.

Roman Umbria

After the battle of Sentino in 295 b.C. won by the Romans against Etruscan, Sabini, Umbrians and Gauls (Livii wrote also about a similar battle fought near Bevagna), Umbria became part of the Roman territory. Many cities became Roman municipii, and to better control this part of Italy a consular road was built, the Flaminia, from Rome to Rimini. This road had a very important role in Umbrian economy, since it crossed the region from south to north, connecting many important cities. Also, diverticula (smaller roads starting from the bigger one) where built to better connect Umbrian cities. For its central region it had an important role in the Second Punic war: first of all, one of the worst defeats of the Romans took place along the Trasimene lake. In 217 b.C. Hannibal was travelling with his army south, followed by a legion, led by Gaius Flaminius (the one who built the Flaminia road). A foggy morning he made an ambush to the Roman legion, hiding his army on the hills: when the Roman army passed by, it was attacked, and being between the Punic army and the lake, it could not even take the fighting position. Many soldiers drown in the lake, only a few being able to flee and go to Perugia. Another battle was fought in Plestia. Also, a legend says that the city of Spoletium (modern Spoleto) repulsed Hannibal army, throwing boiling oil from the walls. Maybe to remember this, now in the walls of Spoleto we can find Torre dell'olio (Oil tower) and Porta Fuga (Escape door). Perugia was also the last refugee of Marco Antionio's followers: it was destroyed by Octavian and then rebuilt on 40 b.C. During the fall of the Roman Empire, Umbria was a land of conquer, and many battles were fought here, such as the one between Goth's leader Totile and the Byzantine general Narsete, near Tadinum (Gualdo Tadino).

Medieval Umbria

An important part of Umbria Medieval hostory leads to the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto, established in 571 and remained independent until 1250. Also, in Umbria many Comuni (independent cities) existed, such as Perugia, Assisi, Foligno and more. During XIV century, cardinal Albornoz came back from Avignon, in France, where the Popes lived for about a century, to restore Church power in Central Italy. He built many castles (rocche) on top of Umbrian cities, such as the Rocca Albornoziana in Spoleto, the Rocca Maggiore in Assisi, Rocca Albornoziana also in Orvieto. Only Perugia, with the Baglioni family, remained independet for a while. In XV century, after the salt war, againt a tax on salt, Perugia was conquered by the Pope's army: the part of the city where the Baglioni lived was transformed in a Castle, the Rocca Paolina, officially for protecting the city from attacks and sieges, but its main role was to control the city and the nobility.

Until 1860 and later

After Umbria fell again under Church control, not much happened, until the unification of Italy.

Umbrian recipes

Some typical Umbrian recipes

Some recipes directly from Umbria!

We'll start with a recipe with saffron, a typical product, found in Umbria in Cascia, which is famous both for Santa Rita and for this wonderful spice, used in many typical dishes here in Umbria!

Yellow Penne
Ingredients:

Penne 500 g
Some threads of saffron
Cream

Cook the penne al dente and then season with cream and saffron. Serve hot. Recall that saffron can be used as powder, and then placed directly on the dough, or you can use the "threads" that are nothing more than a part of the flower. In this case they must be soaked in warm water before use.

Lamb with saffron

Ingredients:

A shoulder of lamb
Extra virgin olive oil
6 pistils of saffron
A glass of white wine
Meat broth
Salt
Pepper

Cut into pieces the shoulder of the lamb. Put it in a saucepan with oil, salt and pepper. Cook, stirring often, and when the meat is lightly colored, add the white wine and let it slowly dry. Add broth to bring the lamb sometimes. Just before removing from the fire add pistils of saffron, after soking them with broth.

Lamb offel

Ingredients:

1 whole lamb offal
1 onion
rosemary
1 slice of lemon
chilli
salt, pepper
olive oil
2 cups of white wine
laurel
If you want, you can add a glass of fresh tomato

Cut onion in very thin slices and cook it in olive oil with a touch of hot pepper; add the offal cut into very small pieces. When the meat is well cooked, add rosemary, salt, pepper, lemon, bay leaf. Add the white wine and let cook slowly for an hour (or a little more). At the end, add tomatoes if you want and... buon appetito!
