Have you read your medical record?

Did you know that with each visit to a healthcare provider, there is documentation created about that visit? Medical transcriptionists play a vital role in the creation of that information when they transcribe what the doctor has dictated. It's important that you are aware of what is in your records so that you can correct any mistakes. Your healthcare records are used for many things, including future care, billing to your insurance company, to provide information to other physicians you may see. What if, for example, your allergies were recorded incorrectly? And then you were in a car accident where you came in unconscious and there was no one to tell the healthcare providers what your allergies are? How would they get that information? They would pull your medical records and look for those things. If the information isn't correct, you could be given a medication that would cause more harm than good! Next time you see your physician or are in the hospital, ask to see a copy of your records and be sure the information is correct!

This lens will give you some more information about those who work behind the scenes to create your healthcare documentation, medical transcriptionists.

Have you ever read your medical records?

For all of us, it is important that the information contained in our healthcare records is accurate and complete. One way to assure that happens is to review your own records and make corrections. Cast your vote below and then come back to see the results!

What is medical transcription anyway?

Medical transcription encompasses the MT, performing document typing and formatting functions according to an established criteria or format, transcribing the spoken word of the patient's care information into a written, easily readable form. MT requires correct spelling of all terms and words, (occasionally) correcting medical terminology or dictation errors. MTs also edit the transcribed documents, print or return the completed documents in a timely fashion. All transcription reports must comply with medico-legal concerns, policies and procedures, and laws under patient confidentiality.

In easy terms, when someone goes to the doctor or is in the hospital, there is a record created about their visit. It often involves many different types of reports. A healthcare provider will dictate those reports, and the medical transcriptionist listens to the dictation and transcribes it. While that sounds simplistic, it requires a great deal of knowledge to be able to do this work.

Medical Transcription can be funny!

Medical transcriptionists have always enjoyed a chuckle here and there as they work. The people who dictate "misspeak," sometimes the medical transcriptionist "mistypes" and with the entrance of speech recognition technology into our world, the speech recognition engine somtimes puts out some pretty funny things.

Tired of all of your time related to MT being about work technology, productivity, and nothing fun. Take a few minutes to laugh about the funny things we hear every day in our work! Get this ebook now for some good laughs!

What do you think?

For many years, the prediction has been that speech recognition technology will replace medical transcriptionists. What are your thoughts on this?

Will speech recognition technology replace medical transcriptionists?

Yes, I think the profession of medical transcription will eventually go away

HorseHelper says:

This is a hard one to make a choice on. Yes, speech recognition will eventually replace MTs, but at the same time there will still be a need for someone to do the editing. So I think the duties of the job will be what changes and MTs will still be working, but as editors.

No, I don't think medical transcriptionists will become obsolete

Montana says:

Dictated by doc: Allergies include bananas, latex, and shrimp.
Transcribed by speech wreck: Allergies: Bananas, latex insurance.

Sure. You want that on your record? I don't want it on mine!

I live near Laws Vegas NV and am trying to find a chapter of the AHDI. Do you have any contacts here? Or even know any other MTs from Las Vegas I could network with? I'm a recent graduate of Career Step and am trying to meet some of my fellow MTs.

Barbara thanks for stopping by. AHDI-West includes Nevada so you might want to go to their website (linked above) and send a note to the officers! This weekend they are all in Phoenix for their regional meeting, but I know they would love to hear from you.

You've done a good job with your lens. I didn't even know the AHDI had regional associations! You learn something new everyday.
