This is just the Beginning
This "Lens" is just the beginning for both of us. I just started training in Aikido and thought it may be helpful to share the knowledge thru a "beginners eyes". Please enjoy the site, check out the links, and check back every few weeks for updates.
What is Aikido?
Aikido is a modern, non-violent, non-aggressive Japanese Martial Art, developed in the 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba (1823-1969). In Japanese, Aikido means the way of harmony with the force and principle of nature. Through consistent and mindful practice, one's character, physical body and spirit can be refined, developed and improved.Aikido is a system of self-defense employing techniques based on circular motions that blend with the attacking energy of your opponent. Training achievement emphasizes a flexible response, rather than rigid, pre-arranged action. Over time, students experience development of strength, flexibility, coordinated movement, increased range of motion, and greater awareness of their body.
How to Find a Good Dojo
These are just some suggestions on finding a good dojo, in my humble opinion. Please take the time to research this topic online, as selecting a DOJO is a very important step in starting your journey.
- Students - The students of a dojo are one of the best ways to determine the overall philosophy and expertise of the school and style being taught. In my case the senior students were extremely nice and welcoming, making it easy to start training.
- How they Train - I would suggest finding out more about the organization the dojo is affiliated with and who / how they accredit teachers. The more you understand the guiding philosophies and teaching methods, the better.
- The Facilities - Not the most important in my opinion, but just as you can tell a lot about someone based on their home, you can begin to understand the dojo from how well it is cared for.
- Cost - These vary widely from dojo to dojo. I am a strong advocate of NO CONTRACT dojos, and I personally enjoy the fact that at my school you can attend any and all classes for the monthly dues.
