Aikijutsu - Martial Art of the Samurai

Aikijutsu the Martial Art honed to perfection on the battlefields of ancient Japan by the legendary Samurai warriors the most feared and respected fighters in all of mankind's bloody history.

Aikijutsu or Aikijujutsu as it is sometimes referred to is a reality based close combat system, It was designed to maim or kill an attacker in real life do or die situations.

Today, Aiki jutsu techniques are as relevant on the street as they were on the battlefield and can be used to subdue an attacker with or without intense pain.

Aiki-jutsu vs Aikido ...

Takeda SokakuTo be fair it's not really a matter of which is better more a question of self protection or self perfection?

In order to explain this better Aikijutsu was developed in the early 20th century by the experienced martial artist Takeda Sokaku who referred to the style he taught as "Daito-ryu". The system was devised to end an attack very quickly usually resulting in great injury or even death to the opponent. Effective and often brutal Aiki-jutsu quickly became the preferred close combat art of the Samurai.

... the birth of Aikido

Aikido on the other hand was developed by Morihei Uyeshiba a student of Takeda who gradually over a 20 year period stripped away the more brutal aspects of Aiki jiu jitsu in order to make it more acceptable to the general public, this wasn't unique in the Japan after World War 2, probably due to the Allied occupation's ban on practising martial arts, the same thing also happened to Karate which became more of a sport than a martial art.

Although not necessarily a bad thing as this opened up the world of martial arts to the young and old, men and women who wanted to practise martial skills safely as an aid to health and fitness.

So the question anyone studying or thinking of studying a martial art should ask themselves is, am I doing this for self development or self defence? If it's the latter my advice would be to take a good look at your preferred art and ask yourself, will this help me in a real life violent confrontation where my life could be at stake?

No matter what your answer would be it is really worth having a look at the reality based arts such as Aikijutsu to give yourself a more rounded view and a more realistic fighting chance.

I used to practice with bamboo swords in my yard with a series of moves. It's kinda like man meets yoga :) though I am not a man!
