If you're in the market for an air compressor, after doing a little research, you will discover that there is more than one type of air compressor available. There are lots of things to consider when choosing the best for you, but knowing what species are available is a good first step. Here are the basic types that are available, ranging from lightweight to heavy.

Hand Carry Portable Air Compressor - although there will obviously be different, these machines are generally lightweight and compact, since they are designed to be hand carried. Wheeled Portable Air Compressor - These compressors are portable, but most are usually too heavy to carry around, so at the base with wheels. Compressor wheels will normally have a higher tank and operate at higher psi output of the compressor is carried out. Usually there are two wheels on the back and legs at the front base with handle. You just lift the front and pull the air compressor along behind you. You can get this heavy duty machine with one or two stage pumps, although the two phases is more common in this style because it is good for higher pressure than a single stage compressor. Securing them to the floor or other surfaces is often a good idea. These are really good at the shop, you just need a long hose and a choice of tools, and you're good to go.

Service Vehicle Air Compressor - these are the compressors that are mounted in the rear, they are heavy duty for large businesses, designed for industrial use. Usually available with one or two stage pumps, they should have a belt to be driven with a larger flywheel, it helps to cool faster and easier to run. Constant run control is also very nice to get one of these units. One of these is only necessary if you are traveling in the industry and requires an air compressor, such as carpet cleaning.

These are the basic types of compressors available, although there are a specialty and compressors, such as air conditioning and fire sprinkler compressors. But for home use, the hand or worn wheels air compressor usually works best. If you need one for regular use by businesses, and service vehicle or a stationary air compressor can be what you need.
