Air-born Allergens Are Difficult for Sufferers
People develop allergies for 2 reasons: 1st, is a genetically predisposed to be allergic; 2nd, factors in your environment, especially when humans are young, make you more susceptible. Most common allergies are caused by a combination of genetics and environment.
Many people suffer from allergies, while others do not. If you are one of the unlucky ones, blame your parents. Scientists now know that many people have a genetic predisposition to be allergic. A child with one parent who has allergies has a 50% risk of developing allergies. This risk increases to 70% when both the child's parents are allergy sufferers.
Someone with a genetic predisposition to allergies is said to be atopic, and more likely to suffer from childhood atopic dermatitis (eczema), atopic rhinitis, and atopic asthma. Atopic allergies typically first appear in very young children with the signature itchy, red rash of eczema. These children may go on to develop the sneezing, runny nose, and congestion of atopic rhinitis around 1 or 2 years old. Many will go on to develop atopic asthma by the age 0f 5 or 6, and there is little likelihood of outgrowing these kinds of allergies. The people who are atopic are typically afflicted with more than one type of allergy through their lives. Atopic diseases are often called allergic diseases.

- Thanks for pointing out the role of molds in polluting the indoors air. The fungus in the microscopic picture above (Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger) are responsible for the kind of pneumonia that's really hard to cure. They are fungi not bacteria, so there is antibiotic option. In many cases this infection is lethal.

- I have 2 or 3 weeks every year on vacation in France on the Atlantic Coast breathing that air eating only natural fresh foods and I end up feeling great. Then back to modern life and all the pollutants, food additives and wondering why I'm so exhausted

- Wow! I'm sold! LOL I don't have an air purifier, but I have to say, after reading this article, I want one. I couldn't help but wonder if it would help cut down on our headaches and illnesses. - Tonight I deep friend "onion things", like onion rings--I use a beer batter and cut the onions in big petals. I can fry a whole large onion that way in a wok shaped pan, rings just seems to have to have more space. Anyway, what I wanted to say is the the EcoQuest used the whole time I was frying and for about a half hour after completely removed any onion smell in the house. I probably wouldn't have needed the extra half hour.
