Airbrush tanning has gained popularity recently as a safe alternative to using tanning beds or tanning in the sun. As concerns over the possible relation between UV and skin cancer grow, people have turned to airbrush tanning solution and airbrush guns just like the ones listed below.

How does airbrush tanning solution get me tan?

Sunless tanning solutions contain an ingredient called Dihydroxyacetone, or "DHA" for short. DHA is a carbohydrate that comes from the fermentation of glycerin in plant sources such as sugarcane and sugar beets. DHA is non-toxic and, in the 70's, was placed on the permanent list of approved cosmetics by the FDA.

"DHA reacts chemically with the amino acid groups, which are part of the protein containing keratin layer on the skin surface. Various amino acids react differently to DHA, producing different tones of coloration from yellow to brown. The resulting pigments are called melanoidins. These are similar in coloration to melanin, the natural substance in the deeper skin layers which brown or 'tan', from exposure to UV rays." Source: Wikipedia

Airbrush Tanning Solutions

Airbrush tanning solutions are usually sold with and without bronzer. An advantage to solutions that have bronzer in it is the fact that you are able to see where you are spraying it on. Solution takes a few hours to turn the skin brown, so if it's clear it's hard to see areas you may have already sprayed or areas that you may have missed. People also tend to enjoy the instant gratification of being tan as soon as the tanning solution is applied.

Airbrush Tanning Guns

Airbrush tanning guns come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. What you want to look for when getting a spray gun is the diameter range of the spray; how wide and narrow it can spray. Wider sprays cover more body faster, but if you're able to change the width and make it narrow, it's easier to do touch-ups and pronounce certain areas of the body.

There are larger airbrush tanning guns on the market that may require higher amounts of air pressure, so it's a good idea to check to see what PSI is required of your air compressor prior to purchasing a gun.

Air Brush Tanning Supplies

There are lots of different supplies that will help the airbrushing process. Solutions that help PH Balance of the skin will help the overall tone and the length of the tan's duration. Barrier creams protect areas, like feet, from becoming tanned.

Tanning from tanning solution doesn't help the skin be protected from the sun's harmful rays. It's a good idea to have a moisturizer/SPF to apply because not only will it protect from the sun, but it will help keep the skin moisturized, keeping it from exfoliating the great looking tan.
