Air Conditioner - Necessity or Luxury?
Ranked #16,760 in Home & Garden, #240,338 overall
I want my air conditioner!
I was born and raised in a tropical climate and I can't live without an air conditioner. Some people consider air conditioning a luxury but to me it's a necessity as I get hot and sweat easily. My dad however, didn't care much for it. In fact, he couldn't stand it. I thought that was weird until I knew another person exactly like him. My mom didn't care one way or the other.
I grew up in a house with no air conditioning. When I was little whenever we went out shopping or stayed at a nice hotel I noticed that it was nice and cool there. My mom told me that was because they used something called an "air conditioner." So I naively thought that that luxury stuff was only used in public or commercial places and not in individual homes since we didn't have one.
As I grew up I realized that many homes actually had air conditioners. So I told my dad it would be great to have one in our house too, but he said he didn't like it. He said it wasn't natural. He preferred the fresh and natural cool mountain air. By the way, most of the time we went to the mountains for vacation, which was nice. I loved the cool mountain air too but we lived in a very warm and humid city, and I wouldn't mind having an artificial cool air at home :)

Window air conditioners
An air conditioning system for a single room
When I was in middle school we moved into a new house in a nice neighborhood where most of the homes had air conditioning. My dad finally gave in and bought a window conditioner for my room. Needless to say, I was overjoyed.
Portable air conditioners
Different types of air conditioning system
A portable air conditioner is one on wheels that can be easily transported inside a home or office. Portable true air conditioners come in two forms, split and hose.
Evaporative coolers, sometimes called conditioners, are also portable but do not have a compressor or condenser. They work by evaporaring liquid water on the cooling fins, releasing the vapour into the cooled area. The advantage is that they don't require hoses to vent heat outside the cooled area, making them truly portable; they are also very cheap to install and use less energy than refrigerative air conditioners. The disadvantages are that unless ambient humidity is low (dry climate) cooling is limited and the cooled air is very humid and can feel clammy.

Auto air conditioner
I need air conditioning in my car too
Our car back home wasn't air conditioned either. Back then air conditioning wasn't a standard equipment in regular cars (only in luxury ones). When I was in college I had my own car and still air conditioning was optional at the time. I had to add it later on after I had the money. It wasn't too bad because I was living up north, and it was cool most of the time, but it could get quite warm in the summer.

- It's a good idea to consider what objects and plants may be obstructing heat from entering the home from the outside, if you are wanting to warm up a room. Is there big awnings or canopies, large trees or shrubs than could be obstructing the sun from coming in and warming up the space naturally?

- Where you live is something you need to take into consideration when purchasing an air conditioning unit. If you live in a very warm climate, you need to buy an air conditioning unit that can work well in high temperatures. Similarly, if you live in a cooler climate, you may need to ensure that your air conditioner is able to function at below zero, not all units will do this so keep this in mind.

- The most economical and the most efficient air conditioner is window mounted unit. It can be mounted easily on your window. You do not have to make a hole or slot on your wall to install the AC. If you want to have more economical and small portable air conditioner
, you can use portable air conditioner. This conditioning system allows you to bring and put it anywhere. This cooling system will be very helpful for the people who like to move from one place to other place.

- OMG, may I sincerely share with you something? I have always been conservative in many things -- A/C and heat! But, after wintering in mom's fifth wheel, I have come to appreciate a new appreciation for being BRUTALLY hot and then not too long after that, BRUTALLY cold! In fact this morning ... when I knocked on mom's door and said, "the gas tank must be empty!" Living in the South, you expect to use that A/C; but using the furnace is a dose of reality. Reality at 5am EST.
