Extreme Engineering DVD

Aircraft Carriers

Amazon Product Description: "Extreme Engineering unveils some of the most ambitious architectural plans of our time. Some are theoretical; others are in the works. But each of these modern marvels poses challenges that stretch the definition of what's possible. Watch as jaw-dropping computer animation and first-hand accounts from builders, designers and engineers breathe life into the most extreme construction projects ever conceived. Watch as work continues on the $4.5 billion USS George Bush aircraft carrier, midway through its four-year construction at Newport News, Virginia. While huge cranes - each capable of hoisting 900 tons - carefully lift 160 massive sections of the completed flight deck into place with metronomic accuracy, the pressure mounts as workers race to avoid any delays."

USS Midway DVD

A DVD about the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier

USS Midway - The Hero Ship (History Channel)

USS Midway

Now a Musem in San Diego

USS MidwayThe Midway matched the Missouri in longevity, achieving a staggering 47 years in service. Launched just too late to fight in WWII, she didn't have to wait long for prolonged battle action, outdoing even many of the WWII veteran carriers in fighting service. She was involved in the air offensive off Vietnam beginning in 1963, accounting for some of the first MiGs downed by the US. She would become a mainstay in the offshore carrier force designated Yankee Station, flying numberless sorties into the heart of the North Vietnamese missile and MiG defenses. Her rescue sorties to snatch away downed flyers were legend. The Midway was a stabilizing force in the seas off Arabia during the many crises in the area. And in the first Gulf War, the old veteran was right in the middle of launching killing sorties into Kuwait. The Midway is still afloat as a battle museum at San Diego, California.
