In Memory Of Bobby
Bobby was an Airedale Terrier and the most adorable thing, my friend, my companion, my first and last dog! And only after writing those two first sentences my eyes are full of tears, as I think back of my precious Bobby. Loosing your pet, no actually your best friend, is the hardest thing a person can go through. When we had to put him to sleep I just turned 20, and it was the worst thing I ever had to go through. Now, I have the urge to write about him to have this memory of him and share my passion about my dog. Hopefully I will see him again one day in another life, where we both can run and play together again as we did when he was still with us! Bobby I still love and miss you!
[Unfortunately I only have 3 pictures of Bobby, so I had to find some on Google. I really searched for pictures that best resemble Bobby's look and behavior!]
My Mom's Conditions For Me Getting A Dog!
Before I tell you about the day I got my dog, I want to describe the conditions my mom set for me to get a dog at all ;-) I was 10 years old and I was asking my mom for a dog. At that time, my mom was raising us by herself and she didn't believe a dog would be taken care of by use children (me and my brother who was 6 at that time). So she set a couple of conditions for me to get the dog:
1. You children completely take care of the dog (FINE! No problem!)
2. You children will take the dog out for a walk ALWAYS and without complains or the dog will have to leave (FINE! No problem!)
3. Before you get the dog the deal is that you don't drink any Coke for 1 year ;-) (FINE! No problem)
I think I must explain point number 3 ;-) Today I really have to laugh about it!
When I was 10 years old I loved to drink Coke (or Coca Cola how we call it in Europe). We loved that drink and always wanted to have it. So in order to stretch some time, and probably thinking I could not meet this condition, this was one of her requirements. The same day I stopped drinking Coke! And I stopped for a long time. One year later I still didn't have my dog. So I went to my mom and pointed out that I can only prove condition 1 and 2 when the dog is here and that I met condition number 3! I was patient and still didn't drink any Coke!
I waited for another year and went back to my mom, I was 12, and said: Listen, I met the 3 requirement for longer than you asked. When do we start looking for a dog?! At that point my mom met a new man in her life. They renovated the appartment and we had new carpets placed. My mom's excuse was that the dog would mess up the new carpets, so she didn't want a puppy who would mess them up.
However, her new boyfriend had Airedale Terriers before and was totally convince a dog would add value to a child's life. So we agreed to get an adult dog, either adopt one from the shelter or get one from someone who couldn't take care of the dog anymore. My mom's boyfriend really wanted an Airedale Terrier, he said those are the kindest dogs he knew, family dogs, and good with children. They gave me homework: Call breeders and find out where we can get a dog that is older than 2 years but younger than 5. Next day I started calling. I had 5 addresses which I forwarded to my mom's boyfriend. He would make the final calls and find out more! He really did!
I Really Wanted A Dog!
While waiting for a dog of my own
In those two years I was waiting for my dog, I couldn't just sit and wait and do nothing. I really wanted a dog and knew that in the same apartment building there were two families with dogs. One day, I decided to gather all my courage and ring their bell. The door went open:
I: "Hi, my name is Alex, I live upstairs!"
Neighbor: Yes we know you, how can I help you?
I: "I was wondering if you allow me to walk your dog tomorrow after school?"
Neighbor: You want to walk my dog?
I: "Yes, I would love to walk your dog if I am allowed"
Neighbor: Yes, why not, you can take him for a walk today as well if you want!
I: "Reeeaaaaallllly? I would love to! How long am I allowed to stay away?"
Neighbor: As long as you want, just bring him back save!
I: "Thank you so much, of course I will"
They gave me the leash and the dog and I went for a long walk! Outside, I felt like the proudest kid. I had this Golden Retriever with me, a real dog, and I felt as if I could hug the whole world. I was so happy of my accomplishment and glad that I had the courage to ring the bell. I guess the neighbor thought I was crazy and never experienced anything like that. I stayed away for two hours, played with the dog in the park and it felt great.
When I brought the dog back, the dog was nicely tired from all the running and playing and was just as happy and satisfied as I was. The neighbor smiled at me and asked: 'Did you have fun?" Of course I did! It was awesome, I loved that dog! The woman asked me if I still wanted to come tomorrow after school to walk the dog again! YES YES YES! I would be there around 2pm to pick up the dog again. She smiled and said ok, then I see you tomorrow again! I went back upstairs and told my mom of what I just did. She was laughing but worried I would bother the neighbor. I think a couple days later she went downstairs to them to double check if they were ok with that. But they were, for them it was great, they had more time for themselves in the afternoon and the dog was happy too, because the walks were great, fun and long!
I went to pick up the dog every day after school for the next year - until the neighbors bought a house and moved out of the apartment.
I lost my dog - so I went back to my mom asking for one of my own. I kind of proved that I would take care of a dog as well!
What You Need To Know About Airedale Terriers

The Airedale Terrier, the "King of Terriers," is full with personality. His temperament can best be described with: energetic, curious, lively, and excited. You get the feeling that the Airedale thinks he is a comedian and will provide you with years of comic relief. He craves your attention and will act out to get it.
Airedales are very intelligent, and quick learners, but they certainly think for themselves, so they might be quite stubborn - Yes they are! They like to work with you, not for you. Airedales tend to be naughty and act like puppies until they are about two years old. They like to destroy doggie beds, shred newspapers and eat rugs. They also love to dig - Bobby was constantly digging huge holes in our garden! They will also steal laundry and food.
I remember a funny story when my stepfather made himself bread with cheese and left the plate on the table in the living room to go to the bathroom. I was sitting on the couch watching TV when I watched Bobby eating the cheese off my stepfathers bread. He did that so carefully, it was hilarious. I was laughing so hard that I couldn't even act, I just let him commit his crime. When my stepdad came back and saw his bread with butter, and me crying and laughing on the couch, he kind of knew what had happened. We both laughed and Bobby totally knew he was not allowed to do that!
Airedales are loyal, devoted, and protective, and will bark when someone approaches the door. They are excellent watch dogs! The Airedale will certainly stand his ground (one time that the stubbornness works for you). However, Airedales like to find their own adventures in life. To minimize their misbehaviors, it is imperative that you give your Airedale daily exercise. They enjoy doing most anything you do: hiking, jogging, backpacking, canoeing, camping, and agility. Be carefull when letting your Airedale off the leash outside, they tend to run off as soon as they smell the wild life. It's their instinct. Uou will end up searching your Airdale for many hours, as I had to do with Bobby a couple of times.
Airedales do wonderfully with children, but these are large, exuberant, high energy dogs with head-butting enthusiasm who like to roughhouse. They can injure a young child without ever meaning to, because of their energetic temperament many breeders recommend they don't go to homes with young children. When we got Bobby I was 12 and my brother was 8. We totally did not find that Bobby was harsh on us. Exactly the opposite was the case: Bobby was gentle and careful and he knew when was the perfect time for playing.
Airedale owners need to keep a close eye on their dog's health, because Airedales rarely show pain. They can be seriously injured or really ill and still be wagging their tail. If you want to own an Airedale, then you will need to be devoted to a high maintenance, high energy member of your family. Airedales really need your affection and attention and they will want to supervise everything you do. With careful, diligent, patient training and parenting, the Airedale can be the best family pet in the world, but you have to be the right family. You need to be okay with a rowdy, jolly joker helping you run your house!

The Day I Got Bobby
The best day of my life!
One day, it was again couple of months later, my brother and I were already in bed (we shared one big room together). Late in the evening, we didn't expect it at all and knew about nothing, suddenly the door of our bedroom opened up and this huge happy dog ran in, jumped on our beds and licked our faces. He was full of energy and seemed enormous to me. Yes, he was full grown already, he was 3 years old, and I totally didn't know how to estimate his behavior. Would he bite, would he be kind - I didn't know yet. Unable to fall asleep from all the excitement we asked if Bobby could sleep in our bedroom. Yes, that was allowed! So he stayed with us - the whole night - and when I woke up the dog was sleeping under my head, like a very soft and fluffy pillow. It was awesome, I loved the dog from day one and he apparently loved me too. Finally I had him and I was constantly asking if this is really the dog I can keep. Yes it was MY dog! How do Airedale Puppies Look Like?
Bobby's Sad Story And His New Life With Us
After I got to know Bobby a little better, I found out he had a couple of obsessions and fears. In the beginning he kind of got afraid when you reached above him - he thought he would be hit. Another thing was his obsession with shoes - but only if a man was wearing them in the morning -I had a feeling that he had a bad experience with that too. Maybe being kicked or something like that.So I asked my moms boyfriend where he got the dog and he explained that he visited several dogs to find the perfect match for us. When he arrived at one of those locations, he noticed this dog sitting in the corner of the room, his owner, a man, seemed very rough and loud and my mom's boyfriend immediately felt like he must get this dog out of there. That was Bobby, a 3 year old Airedale Terrier. We kept his name to not confuse the dog. He was a very sweet dog but shy around his previous owner. As soon as Bobby took off with my moms boyfriend, his behavior started to change. He was the sweetest dog, he started to win back his confidence and turned out to be the most loyal and adorable dog.
I felt so bad for Bobby. His obsessions and fears were caused by a bad past. Luckily, he recovered from all that! One year after he joined our family we had his complete trust. He knew that he was save with us and completely opened up.

Bobby loved water and wild animals

One thing you should know about Airedales: They really love water! Bobby often took off when running without the leash to take a quick swim wherever possible. Even if the water wasn't the cleanest and we had to give him a bath afterwards. They just love jumping into the water and swim or just play around in it.
Also, he ran away many times as soon as he smelled rabbits or wild birds. So many times I had to search for him for a couple of hours - thinking I lost my dog forever. Many times, after completing his mission, he returned to the spot he saw me last. It just took a lot of patience and hope that nothing happened to him on the way.
Why Airedale's Need Grooming
Airedales have a hard, short-haired, double coat. The hair should be groomed about twice a year. You can let professionals do that, as it is a lot of work to do it yourself! If you keep the coat nice and short it will shed little to no hair. If you do not take care of the coat, you will find your dog to end up as big fluffy teddy bear. At some point he will not even be able to eat and see normally anymore. It is also important to regularly brush your Airedale as his coat becomes sticky and all the food residue will stick to his beard.
Bobby didn't really like being brushed, but he accepted when we did it. He was so funny: Laying there letting us brush him, but he was growling like a bear. He was not biting or anything, just expressing that he didn't enjoy it too much
Airedale Terriers can be good for some allergy sufferers.

Bobby's Protective Instincts
Even though Bobby always was very protective of my brother and me, I remember this one incident where I really needed him! I think I was 14 years old, I was just on my way back home from a long walk with him and saw those 3 boys (my age) walking in our direction. I kind of knew the children in my neighborhood and knew they meant nothing but trouble. I took Bobby on a short leash and told him to watch out. His head went up immediately and he was walking very close to my left leg. He was attentive as I told him to be. I was a little afraid as the boys came closer being all loud and acting as if they were the greatest. I stepped to the right, wanting the boys to pass on my left, Bobby's side. As they passed and where exactly beside Bobby they thought to be all save and made a gesture accompanied by a loud scream pretending to scare or push me.Luckily there was Bobby. He was calm in the beginning but as the boys did their gesture Bobby jumped up standing only on his back legs. He seemed like an enormous lion showing the boys that he is protecting me. All three boys fell to the side into the bushes. I still had Bobby on a short leash, he didn't bite or attack them, just scaring them. I kept on walking and as soon as we made the turn around the corner my tension became less. I hugged my dog and told him that he did well. Bobby was excited and knew he did a good job! After that incident I knew what to expect from Bobby and after always felt save when having him with me. Thank you Bobby! You really cared about me!
When Bobby Got Sick
When Bobby was 8 years old we first noticed that something was wrong with him. One of his eyes was very red and it seemed that there was a swelling behind it. We went to the vet for many many times. He had medicines, unfortunately none of them really helped to bring the swelling down. Then the vet decided to make a scan and found out that he had a tumor behind his left eye.
He needed to be operated and his eye had to be removed. He recovered slowly after his operation, and after that he had to adjust to having only one eye. That was not always easy. He started bumping into things which he could not see without turning his head completely. After a couple of month we noticed that he had pain when opening his mouth too far. The vet said it was his muscle which pulled from the head. He had to receive cortisone for the pain every day together with his food. He also became much calmer and thinner. For the rest he was doing well and we wanted to see how this would develop before taking too quick decisions. He got special food to get his weight up again. We wanted to try everything possible to save him. His urine started to smell like acid from the cortisone and he didn't like to go on long walks anymore ;-(
Around 2 years passed and even though the situation wasn't ideal, he was doing fine. After those two years we noticed that his skin behind the removed eye started to swell up again. The vet said that the tumor might have grown back again - and indeed this was the case. Shortly after that Bobby's condition got worse. It seemed that he was loosing sight on the one eye that was left and that he didn't hear so well anymore. He started bumping more and more and I felt it was time to make a decision fast. Due to his condition we decided the best we could do is not to hold on to him any longer. It felt as if he wasn't happy anymore and we didn't want to torture him. It was the hardest decision ever, but I knew it was the right one!
Bobby's Last Day With Us
The last day was terrible. We had an appointment at the vet. The whole family cried. My mom, who had set all her conditions for me having the dog, loved the dog as much as I did. She didn't want to lose him, just as the rest of my family. We spent the whole day hugging and kissing Bobby and getting used to the thought that this was our goodbye moment. My parents went to the vet with him - Bobby was laying on the table. He knew what would happen and that it would be time to go. He closed his eyes and fell asleep. Even though we had the whole day with him to get used to the thought, it still was the hardest thing! Even though its more than 5 years ago, this was the toughest chapter of my lens.
Now I have 3 cats
