Review: My Favorite Airline-Approved Cat Carrier
Ranked #423 in Pets & Animals, #11,944 overall
The best onboard pet carrier for air travel, IMO
My name is Samhain the Cat, and I've been flying for thirteen years. I'd like to share my experience so that you can make air travel as painless as possible for your pet. On this page I'll review my favorite soft-sided airline pet carrier and recommend a few others suggested to me by other cat owners. My feeder-person has also written a guide to airline pet travel, including pet policies for most major airlines.

In-Depth Review of Sherpa Deluxe Pet Carrier
Why I Like This Cat Carrier
- Since it's soft-sided, it can scrunch down to fit the insanely small 17x12x8.5 inch size restrictions on some airlines.
- It's roomy enough for me to turn around in but not too big. Most pets like snug carriers.
- The zipper top makes it easy to get me in and out at security, and one end unzips drawbridge-style for easy access and exit at home.
- The mesh sides give me fresh air, and don't rub my nose raw like the airholes on my old hard-sided Petmate Cabin Kennel. Flexible plastic frame and bottom insert provide structure.
- The tote-style carry straps distribute my weight, and the shoulder strap attaches with a dog leash clip so it can be used as a spare leash.
- Both ends are covered with velcro-fastened outer flaps that can be rolled up to make windows. When down, most people don't realize there's a cat in here!
- Zipper pockets on both sides are useful for holding travel documents -- mine and hers.
- The washable synthetic fleece liner is cozy, although I tend to scrunch it up like a pillow. Owner puts a disposable liner underneath for extra security.
- Metal O-ring inside lets dog owners clip their pet's collar so pooch can't bolt.
- Velcro strap along the non-mesh side (opposite the zipper pocket) fits securely over luggage handle or mini pull-cart.
- Note: My owner's read two reviews from owners whose cats managed to chew through the mesh and escape. Click the Amazon link above this list to read their reviews.
- For reviews of other pet carriers, visit the Featured Pet Travel Lenses at the bottom of this page or click product listings in my "What's Your Favorite Pet Carrier?" Poll for Amazon customer reviews.
- Stiff, flat plastic floor insert under liner can be removed in a pinch if size restrictions are unusually tight. Floor insert and semi-flexible reinforcing struts along edges of carrier maintain its shape.

Airline Pet Travel Made Tolerable
Grrrr. Owner tormented me by making me pose for these pictures. Here are several views of the Sherpa / Delta Deluxe Pet Carrier, mostly with the end-flaps rolled up (they are flat when unrolled).

Sturdibags Pet Carriers
SturdiBag Small Black Pet Carrier
Amazon Price: $99.99 (as of 02/23/2012)![]()
On 4/3/08 we received the following comment on Greekgeek's Pets on a Plane Travel Guide: "All the carriers here are great, but being a breeder/exhibitor I travel a lot with my show cats and most breeders prefer Sturdibags. Also we all use DryFur pads for keeping our Champions clean, dry and ready to show."

You'll Be Needing These...
Dry Fur Pet Carrier Inserts - Small 2 pack
Amazon Price: $9.69 (as of 02/23/2012)![]()
Here's the Dry Fur inserts. (Other sizes/amounts available -- click the link and browse.) I'd recommend them for my Sherpa bag as well-- the synthetic fleece bottom is removable and washable, but it just barely touches the edges of the carrier and can sometimes scoot away from them. I put one of these disposable pads underneath as insurance; they are a little larger and thus fold up a bit all around the edges, which seems more watertight.
Vote For Your Favorite Airline Pet Carrier
Which Cat Carrier Would You Recommend for Air Travel?
Bergan Comfort Carrier Soft-Sided Pet Carrier, Small, Black
Another popular airline-approved pet carrier available in several colors. 17 x 8 x 12 inches fits most stringent airline size restrictions. Weight: 5 pounds.0 points
Sherpa All-In-One Backpack Carry On Pet Carrier, Medium, Boston Tweed
Airline-approved backpack pet carrier. Available in black (see below) or tweed. 17 x 12 x 9inches, but 12 inch height compresses to 8 inches under seat. Shoulder straps convert to backpack straps.0 points
SturdiBag Small Earthy Tan Pet Carrier
Flexible pet carrier used by most breeders/exhibiters. 18" L X 10" W X 10" H, but it squishes down. Fleece-wrapped eggcrate pad comfortable for aged pets. 4-point shoulder strap. 4.1 pounds, for pets up to 10 pounds. Also available in black.0 points
'SHERPA DELTA DELUXE MEDIUM 18" X 10.5" X 11"
My favorite pet carrier. 18 inches x 10.5 inches x 11 inches.0 points
Sherpa Bag On Wheels - Large
18 x 11 x 10.5 inches, 7.9 pounds. Supposedly fits under cabin seat, but I'm not convinced.0 points
Pet Wheel Around Small/Red
Airline Approved (Call to confirm). 17.5" x 8" x 12" Weights 5lbs 11oz. Note: my owner uses this bag for taking me to the vet. A gnawer might be able to chew through mesh, though that's true of any mesh bag.0 points
Petmate Carriers Wire Top Cabin Kennel - 21060
17 x 12 x 8 hard-sided pet carrier. There's a solid top version as well that can take pets of a few more pounds. I hate this because you can't stand up in it, but if you've got a pet who'd chew through nylon mesh, this is probably the safest option.0 points

- I took one of my cats on a plane some years ago and used a soft sided cat carrier like the one you have featured. When I saw it in the store I thought it was going to be too small and flimsy but it was perfect for plane travel. This is a really good price too. We brought the wrong sort of carrier to the airport (hard sided) and had to buy the soft sided cat carrier at the lugguge store there. What a rip-off! It cost us $100 but we were fortunate to find it, it was the only one they had.

- Someday I should write a lens about the time an airline LEFT MY CAT OFF THE PLANE. It was so horrible!
